Thought I'd share a few pictures of where I live. CA gets slammed a lot (relentlessly, although we have the largest economy in the nation, $1.9 trillion with a "T", and more scientists, engineers and Nobel laureates than any other state]), but it's a big and beautiful place. This is the time of year I like the most, when the grass is green. The air here is very dry, one of the main reasons I decided to move back here and because of the lack of humidity, in the summer, the grass in the hills turns brown. The "golden" brown hills are what give California the name "the golden state".

The white spots on the hills are manganese deposits, this area (San Antone Valley) used to be the largest producer of manganese and quicksilver (mercury) during the second world war, probably the only reason there is anything up here. Very mountainous and hard to traverse, a lot like Afghanistan, yet I'm only about 75 miles from the city of SF; I don't go to the city much, not really my cup of tea, but it's there.

I'm at about 2200 feet right here so it doesn't snow much right where I live or on the roads I use to get into the nearest towns, each about 30 miles away. I have a couple of neighbors, but everyone up here are mountain folk and the rural crime watch laws apply. I don't know exactly what the difference between rural and city law is, but I take it to mean, as does everyone else up here, that if some weird is going on on your property, you shoot first and ask questions later. There is a fire station that is minimally manned during the summer and one small shop/restaurant, no police. If you did have to call the cops for something, you're looking at a minimum hour and a half wait.

Think what you will about California, but it's a diverse place in all respects and I'm sure anyone could find their paradise here. For me, dry air, solidarity and temperate weather.

I was going to walk around this, then I got lazy because I would have had to walk uphill to go around it, so decided to try my RH as a clearing tool.

It actually worked much better than I expected, took about 30 seconds maybe and the beard works well at moving the chopped sticks out of the way. You can't just slash, of course, you need to go for where the branch meets the bush, but it was still very quick and I actually used the top edge.

I had my 1311 in my backpack, but my RH was on my belt, so I figured why not.

Awww yeeah, The Golden State Is Great! Thanks for representing some countryside, man.:cool::thumbup:

those pictures made me miss Cali. I love visiting your beautiful state.

That is really beautiful country. That is a part of California that I would like to visit. The cities I can do without. I am a country boy through and through.

Garth

CA is big, a little less than two thirds the size of Texas. I've met people here that have lived in the country all their lives, listen to country music, wear cowboy hats and speak with a southern accent... native Californians... There's more than a few townships with sub-100 populations. The population density of the SF bay area/Silicone Valley is extremely high as is the LA/San Diego area and a few places up further north (CA should really be quite a few states...) but the rural areas are just that.

The Central Valley is the part of CA I like the least, but I'm a mountain boy and that area is just flat, dry, brown and boring.

I was born in Texas, all my extended family lives there and my favorite place there is the small town where my grandmother lives called Sour Lake, near Beaumont. She lives eight miles from the town and is on 600 acres, half cow pasture, half forest.

I visited Washington state when I was younger and fell in love with the Mt. Rainier area... I might go back to Yosemite this summer, if I do I'll take some pictures, that place is truly amazing...

I love the time of year when Vasco Road is green. Livermore is gorgeous, but I have not spent much time there. I just pass through on my way to Discovery Bay. I have yet to Hike Mt. Diablo, but I can't wait to do so. How do you like the new Dublin Strip mall? A lot of people are saying good things about it, I just rarely get a chance to head out to the East Bay.

I've been in Cali in 94. Been down to SF to SD. I live in Italy, Tuscany to be precise, and i't's my opinion that Cali is quiete simiar to my region. I, too, live in the west coast and the nature, the sightseeing are very similar. Really similar.
Beautiful places, except LA and Long Beach. The worstest places ever seen in my life. SF, San Diego, S. Barbara are lovely places to see and stay, instead. If you are in SD, go to La Scala Restaurant. They really make real italian food.
Believe me.

You know I love living in California too, it is very beautiful, and so diverse. The only bummer is the politics of this state suck, and its way over priced, especially where I live in the Santa Ynez valley, in Santa Barbara county! But man you gotta love the rugged beauty this state has to offer, God bless California!

I live on the SF Peninsula. Redwood City to be exact. The bay area is a beautiful place as long as you don't talk to anyone.

That is sure prettier than Blythe.............where I grew up :)

Born and raised in NorCal. I love it here but the "winds" keep changing this state in a manner that makes me wonder if I'll stay. If I do, it will be away from the Bay Area where I currently live.

Thanks for the pics. Glad you found yourself a place you can call "home".

California earns every criticism tenfold.

That says a lot...

You're right, bad state! Bad! No treats for the bad state! Where's the rolling eyes emoticon?

Not looking to start a CA bashing thread, any other thread that mentions the state's name on BF has already done that, but thanks for adding nothing at all to the conversation....

Remember what your mother said...

I have had lots of fun there though.

I love Cali. I live in SoCal, born and raised. The only reason I think about leaving this states is because my true passion is firearms.

I love your back yard by the way! I could go out there and do some long range shooting. Hellz yeah!

You started a thread talking up California, and pretend to act surprised when people comment on it.
way to add nothing to the conversation:rolleyes:

You will not be talking about anyone's mother here.
