I'm attempting to get pics online without my own website. I thought I'd attempt to link to one here first. Here is a pic of my son, Connor!

If it works, I'll add links to a sheath that I made for a hatchet! Some of you may want to attempt to make a similar one if you carry a hatchet.

YEAH, it worked! I'll go and post the pics of the sheath now!

Here's a front view of the sheath. The sheath is designed to be worn on a belt with the hatchet handle UP. You unsnap the restraining strap and rotate the handle counterclockwise to withdraw the head. It works great and keeps the handle from flopping around. It also allow a safe means of sheathing and withdrawing the hatchet one-handed.

This is a rear view of the same sheath. It was a quick project which I wasn't sure would turn out. It worked so well, I couldn't believe it. I added the D-ring to use on a pack or to attach small item to the sheath while on the belt. I've used it for three years now.

I hope this gives somebody some inspiration. I found pics of a similar sheath in American Survival Guide and made my own. I STRONGLY suggest you make a paper pattern first...I wouldn't have been able to get it to work without making a pattern!

Good luck!

Plainsman,
That is a very cute little guy you have there! How old is he? Is he your only one?
I have two sons age 3 and 1.
How did your interview go up in NoDak?

Take care, (AND a picture of your little one)

Jim

Hi Jim!

Connor is currently 5 months old, he is only 3 1/2 in the picture. He is our only child at the moment and I LOVE IT!

(NAW, I'm not a proud papa! LOL)

I ended up having two interviews in ND and have already been offered one position!
smile.gif

I've declined that position, as I didn't like everything that I saw. Not to mention, several more positions have opened up and I'm sure more will open over the next couple of months as it is early yet.

The weather was a bit nippy that week too! I actually got to see 4 deg one night!!

It figures, two winters since I've been home and this is the nicest they've had so far, but when I come back the mercury drops!

Thanks for asking!

OK, Plainsman: let's admit that the sheath was a good excuse to post Plainsman Jr's photo

Connor is a nice kid and congrats to the happy dad!
Also, kudos for the sheath. BTW, what is your opinion about putting the snap closure on top vs. the bottom (considering retention and accessibility of axe)?

Best,

HM

I would assume you mean versus turning the sheath upside down with handle down!?!

I've found that with the handle UP that it NEVER gets in the way while walking/working. I can QUICKLY and EASILY reach back and grab the handle, unsnap the strap and withdraw the hatchet one handed without ever looking at it. Also, for putting it back you reverse the steps and it never takes the second hand.

I've also found that I WILL carry the hatchet more as it rides unnoticed over my right kidney on my trouser belt. If I carry a day pack, it rides without problems. I then attach my sheath knife in front of it on the belt and it gets in the way more than the hatchet.

As to retention, the hatchet RIDES in the sheath with all the weight being held by it. The snap/strap just keeps it from bouncing out. Hence, I feel it is much safer and more secure this way. Mind you, I've made the sheath close enough fitting that the hatchet literally has to be withdrawn from the leather and I don't think it would ever "bounce" out if I forgot to snap it.

Now if somebody would make one out of KYDEX or something similar and let us know how that worked!

I don't like hatchet handles or knives flopping around hanging off my belt and this sheath has taken care of that for the hatchet. Now if I can just figure out a way to carry a knife like that.

Get pics, the sheath looks very functional and well made. Conner is a great looking boy, but I am betting he takes after mom

.

You should try kydex with your ideas Plainsman, if you have a toaster oven I can send you directions on how to form a sheath, as a matter of fact it probably is still posted on the old Blades N Stuff website of the late (and great) Bob Egnath.
