OT: Post-Apocalyptic Books

I think I may have read on the beach in school. pretty bleak, as I recall.

Thanks for the tip on Footfall.

I may try to look that one up again. It has been many many years since I read any of these!

ps I guess "Starblazers" would qualify as a sort of PA fantasy cartoon series?

It's been a while, but there was a decent book called The Last Ship that dealt with a US Navy destroyer alone at sea during a nuclear winter. They wander looking for a place to set up civilization on land again.

Another interesting/weird site I found a while back is Apocalypse Fiction Magazine. One of the best things in their forums is the Diary, a fiction series updated every day, written from the POV of a global plague survivor.

You might want to try;

False Dawn by Chelsa Quinn Yarboro

It sort of fits into the Mad Max catagory if memory serves.

Forgot one of the best of all time. Not very well known. "Emergence" by David Palmer. Only book I've read with a Hyacinthene macaw as a main character.

"A Canticle For Leibowitz" by Walter Miller was one of my favorites. It has become a SF classic. Not exactly post-apocalyptic, but shares much with that genre and extends over a vast time period encompassing many social evolutions of apocalyptic intensity.

the best post apocalyptic book ive ever read was the book that spawned all modern zombie films - starting with night of the living dead (NONE of wich have even come close to doing the book justice)

richard matheson's
I AM LEGEND

utterly amazing.

The best one yet, "Dies the Fire" by S. M. Stirling, it is just out in hardback. "Wolf and Iron" is great also and an oldie by a Frenchman named Merle, titled "Malevil".

Most alternate history stories are close enough to post apocalypse for me and I like the S. M. Stirling, David Drake, Harry Turtledove and Eric Flint books. The 1632 series from Eric Flint is great, and it is now being expanded with stories by other authors.

If you haven't discovered John Ringo yet, start with "A Hymn Before Battle", it's an alien invasion story but it is pretty apocalyptic! Powered battle armor! Yellow blooded aliens that eat lawyers and politicians! Babes with assault rifles! How much better does it get?

His other series, written with Weber is pretty good too.

Theyre a "sure sign of a sick mind" and one of my favorite strange indulgences. I like them all: The Postman, The Stand, Lucifers Hammer, Earth Abides, Alas Babylon, War Day, I am Legend... all great in their own ways.

Any of you guys read or enjoy these things? Any thoughts or opinions?

I figured this might be a refreshing new topic, but who knows? :)

Yeah, baby! Man after my own heart! I Am Legend is my favorite book of all time! The Stand is up there too. Lucifers Hammer sounds familiar, but I don't think I've read it.

Check out a fairly new author named Yvonne Navarro:

"Afterage" The world is plagued by Vampires (loosly inspired by I Am Legend) who keep humans penned up to feed on. A few remaining humans fight...

"Final Impact" The earth is struck by a Meteor at the beginning and the Earth stops rotating on it's axis leaving half the earth too cold to inhabit and half to hot to inhabit. The rest of humanity tries to keep alive in the perpetual ring of "dusk/dawn" that goes around the globe.

"Dark Shadows" is the sequal to "Final Impact" where humans begin to evolve in strange ways to adapt to their new world. Dark Shadows is a disease that threatens the remaining humans.

Try one. You'll like. I promise. :D
