OT - Return of the Sith

I saw it yesterday, and liked it. I'd been a bit disappointed with the other two prequels, and went into this one prepared to be disappointed. It has its flaws, but I think it comes much closer to recapturing the old movies. I'm planning on seeing it again, hopefully having discarded my preconceptions.

I, for one, have to put a vote in favor of loud movie theaters. I like an immersive experience (at the price of tickets these days, I sure don't want to be distracted) and I've noticed that audiences are a whole lot less likely to chat with each other as the volume climbs. If we could just outlaw cell phones we'd have it made. :)

The 2nd prequel's lightsaber duel with Yoda pissed me off.

Everybody else thought it was so cool, but I was saying, Who cares if he can spin like a top?

I woulda been more impressed with a single deft thrust that ended the fight, not a lot of motion and fury with little effect. (Unlike, say, the final sword "fight" in Underworld. :D )

"Deep Space Nine" beat down viewer interest in the ST franchise...

I want to see this new "Sith" movie, but when I remember Jar-Jar Binks.... cringe, I do.

Hey now. I liked DS9. :D

Don't sweat JarJar. You see him for 2 seconds and never hear him.

Caught the 1201 show, too. It ties the franchise together nicely.

Captain Antilles was the droids previous owner in SW-ANH. It was a nice touch telling him to wipe 3PO.

I liked it.

I haven't posted here in QUITE some time but for the sake of clarity for Yoippari. The Capt Antilles in "Sith" was the Captain of the Tantive IV which is the vessel that Leia is captured on in the beginning of Episode IV. And in connection with the books that you have read, more than likely the outstanding X-Wing series :D , it was mentioned in those books atleast twice that the Captain Antilles of the Tantive IV was merely a like-named person and was no relation to the Commander Wedge Antilles of Rogue Squadron. Yes I am a super star wars freak.

I don't know why after a few years since my last post that I decided to post this time. Heck it was a miracle I remembered my username and password.

Just downloaded the widescreen version of Star Wars III. Will write a review shortly. Uhmmmm Bruise, WHO is Porkins???

Underworld -Kate Beckinsale. Breathing deepens, pleasurable thought arise... :) She can keep playing roles in vampire movies for the rest of her career as far as I'm concerned.

As an aside, is anybody else bothered by the sound levels in movie theatres these days? Most movies are so loud that it hurts.
About 15 years ago, or more, I stopped going to movies
because I always left with a splitting headache
from the excessive sound.
Then I realized I could wear earplugs.
Still get the physical impact of the sound
but without the hearing damage.
If i forget earplugs
I mash up & roll up a small bit of paper napkin
to make some.

Now my wife chooses earplugs too.
Sometimes my daughter wears them,
but it's hard to get her to keep them in.

I know the levels are above recognized safety limits.
Wonder if anyone has ever tried to file a lawsuit;
that might make the industry pay attention.

"And the movie sound level is actually higher than the limits that OSHA sets for sound exposure on the job, where OSHA regulations stipulate that workers should not be subjected to more than 85 decibels over a period of eight hours. For every three decibels over 85, the time is cut in half. So the agency would not allow more than a 15-minute exposure to 100 decibels. "

my italics, 90-100 decibels is -very- common.

It has been years since I read the books and even longer since I read the xwing series. I have read everything from truce at bakura to New Jedi Order. I stopped about four or five books into the NJO series. Thanks for clarifying the Antilles mixup.

As long as she deserves to wear tight black outfits, she can be in any movie she wants to....

Welcome back QM3SS

I know what you mean Spectre...

When I saw episode II in the theatre, the audience started laughing when Yoda was flipping out.

I kept thinking to myself...

" This is Kermit.......

This is Kermit on drugs.........

Any questions?"

You don't know who Porkins is? You get negative rep for that.
:)

Porkins was in the original Star Wars. When the X-wings are attacking the Death Star, he's one of the first guys to die.

Porkins Lines

. . . that actually made it to the movie.

"Red Six standing by."

"I'm right with you red three."

"I've got a problem here."

"I can hold it."

"No I'm alright, I'm alrightaaaarrrrrggghhhhh.... "

Here's a webpage. :D

saw it tonight.

really liked it.

better fight sequences than episode II.

Liked Obi Wan's character development.

Liked Mace Windu and how he handled himself.

Still, episode I remains my favorite of the 6

That could change with a few more viewings. A lot to take in...

I really liked Revenge of the Sith, after hating "Attack of the Clones" and "Phantom Menace." As usual the dialogue was awful, but the story arc and action were excellent, and tied a lot of loose ends. I watched "Star Wars" the same day, and was amazed. I still think Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back are the best of the lot, before he took it too seriously. I saw them all in the theater as I grew up, they'll always be in my memories, flawed or not.
I'm only up this late because I have a kidney stone. Ow.

I have to say that i was pretty impressed with this movie. the acting was wooden as in the last two, but what can you expect when you're standing in front of a green screen and the written dialog has all the grace of a garabage truck with no tires on its rims. They really did tie up the movies and link the new ones with the old ones. I think i'll take an afternoon to watch one or two of the original (well as original as they can be on DVD) movies.
Return of the Jedi was the first movie i ever saw in the theater. The theaters around here also had showing of the first two from time to time. Episode V is my favorite as I have gotten older. There's just something about seeing those ATATs lumbering in and attacking Echo base on Hoth.
Don't get me wrong. I like Dune. I saw it as a kid...didn't understand what the heck was going on, but i liked it. It's more of a cerebral ride, but didn't affect me like SW did. I can't tell you how many broom handles became light sabres in my hands, how many times we pissed off the tall neighborhood kid because we made him talk like a wookie, or how many metal trash cans were put on a skateboard or a furniture dolly and tugged along as the sassy R2D2.
Not great movies, but they did shape my childhood.

Jake

If you search around on the net, the original laserdisc versions have been transferred to DVD. The quality is pretty good. They're good for when you want to see what you saw as a kid.

When I was a teenager I used to go to my friend's house and sit there with him blasting his electric guitar through a huge amplifier. However, these days I find the sound levels in the movies quite annoying, mainly because the dialog and speaking are hard to hear, but the explosions are extra loud. The last time we watched a movie in the theater my pregnant wife said the baby kept kicking her every time there was a loud noise, we haven't been back since. And I'm not looking forward to having to take my kids to a bunch of loud movies when they get bigger, either.

No Dune.

No Star Wars.

What else is next?

No Zombies?

No Beer?

(mutter mutter mutter)

There are talks of a Star Wars tv series, live action. Maybe after Lucas is in the ground, his kids will make the last Star Wars trilogy.

I really liked it, I believe that it is on par with Empire Strikes Back, this Star Wars geeks favorite movie. Corny dialogue in some spots, but a great story IMHO.

I guess I'm on the outside on this one. We saw it last weekend and there were times that I laid my head back, closed my eyes, and just waited for it to be over. I was like there was no suspense. You knew that every Jedi was going to do the exact worst thing at the exact worst time every single time. "No, Anakin, you stay here while my trusty expendable Jedi and I deal with the chancelor by walking into his office with our weapons holstered and stand in a clump in the doorway where we can't move without bumping into each other."

I guess the worst thing was, not once did I believe Anakin's motivation for going to the dark side. His mother's death was well handled, but the events in this movie just didn't convince me. I am a huge science fiction fan, and I can suspend disbelief about all kinds of scientific stuff, FTL travel, telepathy, whatever, but if I can't believe in a character's motivations, then I'm done, I lose interest instantly. Half an hour into the movie I was wishing I had brought my handheld so I could have been reading John Ringo's "Into the Looking Glass", that I had just downloaded from Baen books.

To be fair, my wife and daugher loved it, even though they thought Anakin was a twit too. My daughter said, "sure, but it's Star Wars, and I got to see Obi Wan, and the Millenium Falcon, and Chewy one more time."

I just wish somebody would make a movie about the Honor Harrington books, or Hammer's Slammers. I think Brad Pitt would be great as Major Joachim Steuben.

I like the first prequel, Episode 1 when Anakin was a kid. I hated the second "clone" one, and despite trying twice just couldn't get through the damned thing. My son and his friends grabbed a cooler and a couple of pizzas and waited in line to see this one and they liked it a lot, so maybe I'll give it a chance as well.

regards,

Norm
