OT: Satori Recants - S30V Ain't Half Bad

The dendritic cobalt alloy is evidently extremely corrosion proof, even in salt water. It supposedly sharpens up quite readily on a regular whetstone.
It won't rust at all, you can leave it sitting in salt water with no ill effects, and yes it sharpens easily on a regular hone. It is however very soft, ~35 HRC, and thus the edge will roll rather easily and won't react well to cutting hard materials. Spyderco has a line of H1 knives which are much harder and also will easily handle salt water with no concerns.

Perhaps that's just its way of turning itself into a serrated edge?
OMG, I think I'm starting to sound like Bruise...

I put a new edge on it, chopped up a beer can, batoned some wood, and it still sliced paper at the end. It developed some tiny chipping that could just about be felt with a fingernail but wasn't visible. Three passes on either side with the strop got it polished again. I'll put the pic of the aftermath up later.

It's back in my good graces. The sea trials are on again.

I'm really interested in your tests. Have you tried slicing/hacking a lot of wood. Maybe copper wire. What I want to know is if it chips easily with semi-normal materials. It would really suck if you had to reprofile the edge before it performs.

Competition in the Indulgence market can only be good for the consumers. ;)

But expensive...what if you bought the wrong indulgence? We are all doomed to buying both brands from now on...

Did you change the edge angle?

Only slightly. However, instead of sharpening on stones this time I did all the work on belts. The edge is now heavily convexed.

You ride a 'cycle. You are not a man afraid of chance. :D

If the edge is heavily convexed, doesn't this significantly change the angle at the edge, or did you just grind a higher relief?
