These online petition things are utterly worthless. Politicians pay absolutely no attention to them.

Why?

Because it's far to easy "sign" many times. There's no way to validate the names. And it's far to easy to sign someone else's name.

Some years ago, a friend of mine "signed" one opposing gun control and demanding an end to the AWB. But he was afraid of getting a bunch of junk mail, so he put his parent's address in Iowa instead of his own Oregon address. (One can question the ethics of deluging one's parents in junk mail, but that's another topic.) Shortly thereafter, he received a reply to an e-mail he never sent, a reply from the office of his parent's US Senator. The e-mail thanked him for expressing his concerns about rising gun violence and the need for more gun control. The original e-mail that appeared to have come from him was attached. The header looked just like it had come from his computer, but the text was absolutely contrary to everything he believed in. The note from the Senator's office asked him to call them on an 800 number if he had further comments. He called. After he explained that he hadn't sent the original e-mail, they said, "We thought so. We've been getting a lot of this. These people take your address and look up which representatives represent you, but they got it wrong in this case since you gave them the wrong address, then they use your e-mail address and other information to spoof a fraudulent e-mail to us. Don't worry, we disregarding just about all of the e-mail we receive. If you ever do want to express your opinions, send a postal letter."

The only purpose of those things is to get suckers to come to a website. :thumbdn:
