Hi guys,

No, this is not about the usual hog disease that we all know as infi addiction !

My wife and me should fly to California in about 2 weeks. We are in Italy and we just heard scarying news about an epidemy of swine flu spreading across Mexico and South of the USA.

What do they say there about it ? Is it really something to worry about ?

The very few cases here have not made anyone any sicker than a normal type flu(so far). They have all responded well to treatmeant from the two main Flu medicines.
Almost 100 have died in Mexico, where it started. To early to tell why the deaths there, and only sickness here. I suppose its because they have so many cases, and a lack of proper medcines. They'll know in about 30 min if the cases in the NY city school system is the swine flu. There pretty sure it will be. New Zealand is also reporting some cases this morning also.
It could further mutate and become much more dangerous to humans. If that happens there could be a world wide pandemic

I think you will be fine coming here. I'm a little worried about it, but with the way the news can blow things out of proportion at times its just to early to tell how this will progress.
I would keep an eye on the news over the next couple of weeks before your trip. Hopefully it will have died out by then.

We HOGS need to be nicer to hogs. :D

Man, thats not funny at all. We know your views on hunters and meat eaters. I respect your views, as we all have a right to our own, but this thread is not the place. Not with what is happening.

this really scares me.....

i work in tijuana, mexico, and i always buy food from the street vendors......i guess i should start packing my lunch now.....

First I heard of it was on the news last night.
All reports like this make me take note.I have heard people in the know saying a very bad strain is over due.

Ken44, bro---I was joking. :) I will not talk politics on BF. I realize this is serious and we Humans are ripe for a pandemic.

Just bring your SAR4. That will scare way most of the viruses, and you can cut the heads off the few remaining ones that try to infect you.

Seriously, I'm in So Cal and have an infant and we're still not too worried (at this point). I wouldn't worry if I was you.

I will not talk politics on BF.

"talk" and "refer" can be much the same.

I know you were joking, but thought it was the wrong thread for you to "refer" to your beliefs and views about eating/hunting hogs.

Thats all, no biggie, I've always liked you and I'm sorry I even brought it up buddy.

This ain't nothin' next to INFIddiction!! ...But seriously, be vigilant. Wash your hands frequently, and if you start to feel the symptoms (listed below in the quoted text), don't panic but get to your doctor to be tested ASAP. The earlier you get diagnosed & treated, the better off you will be.

CDC.gov said:
What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea....

How can human infections with swine influenza be diagnosed?
To diagnose swine influenza A infection, a respiratory specimen would generally need to be collected within the first 4 to 5 days of illness (when an infected person is most likely to be shedding virus). However, some persons, especially children, may shed virus for 10 days or longer. Identification as a swine flu influenza A virus requires sending the specimen to CDC for laboratory testing...

What medications are available to treat swine flu infections in humans?
There are four different antiviral drugs that are licensed for use in the US for the treatment of influenza: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir. While most swine influenza viruses have been susceptible to all four drugs, the most recent swine influenza viruses isolated from humans are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. At this time, CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses...

School to Close, Other Flu Precautions Recommended

The Texas Department of State Health Services announced today that Byron Steele High School in Cibolo will temporarily close effective immediately as public health and school officials work to keep swine influenza from spreading.

Swine flu was confirmed earlier this month in two students from the school, and a third student is listed as a probable case with confirmatory lab test results pending. The original two have recovered, and the third is recovering. The school is part of the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District in Guadalupe County near San Antonio.

“The purpose is to reduce the risk to students, staff and the community,” said Sandra Guerra, M.D., a DSHS regional director and the public health authority for Guadalupe County.

She also urged students not to be around each other while school is out. “That would defeat the purpose,” she said. The school’s extracurricular activities also will be cancelled.

DSHS is urging the school’s staff, faculty, students and their household members to avoid contact with others, especially if they have symptoms of a respiratory illness.

Additionally, the following precautions are strongly recommended for all residents of Guadalupe County:

Public gatherings should be postponed for the immediate future.
Anyone with symptoms of a respiratory illness, and their household members, should stay home and avoid close contact with others.
Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to those of regular or seasonal flu and include fever, fatigue, lack of appetite and coughing. Some with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Health officials say everyone should follow standard precautions to reduce the spread of any respiratory illness.

Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others.
Cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues.
Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Crap.

I've got some sort of flu-like virus.

And ... I could've been exposed.

Oh, well. Off to Quantico so they can take a sample. This sucks.

I think the swine flu deaths were more associated with poor treatment/misdiagnoses rather than swine flu being more deadly/dangerous than common influenza which has killed record numbers of people. Poorer countries are much more affected by these types of things.

Jamie---Please give an up-date then.

Will do.

If this is the swine flu, it's really no worse than some of the seasonal ones I've had. Of course, I've been getting the annual innoculation for many decades now.

My wife is much tougher than any influenza. She'll see I get through this thing, no matter how irritating to me, personally, it might be.:)

I just want to be absolutely sure I give this to no one.:o

Jamie, if you have been around anyone that has been to mexico you do need to get it checked out. But you know that. Let us know how it goes.

It appears it no worse here than a typical flu strain, and responds well to two types of flu meds. It could mutate into a more deadly form to humans. Or thats what they say, I dought it, but time will tell.
