Glad to hear that you will be okay, smoke and prayers sent your way. Also, thanks for doing the work that you do, I have seen what some of the V.A.s do with the PD that I work at, and there is a definite need for you guys. A lot of times it can be a thankless job, but it can mean a lot to somebody who has gone through something bad.
And I know what you mean about wanting to hurt some of the bad guys, the only comfort is knowing that eventually they will get as good or worse as they have given (karma can be a b----). Also, situations can flare up even after things have supposedly calmed down, I have an old set of body armor that you are welcome to if you want it. It will probably look like a shower curtain on you, but it is better than nothing.
