That picture just reenforces why I joined the AF instead of the Navy.

Those waves give me the willys. I must have had a bad experience in a previous life. :)

Sarge,

Not sure whether to be glad you're not going to be in danger (immediately, anyway) or sorry you won't be there to help.

Maybe later.

Sarge, did you notice the one Humvee is parked close to the edge? Driver was trying to make room for more trucks. Are there rules about how many vehicles you can stick on top?
I'm sorry you're not going if that's what you were up for.

I saw something on TV today I hadn't realized; the Humvee had a "Humvee" sticker on the window. Geeze. They gotta advertize even going to war?

The pic that Sarge posted reminded me of a very moving experience I had yesterday. I was driving south on Hwy 53 in Wisconsin and came across a National Guard convoy. This convoy had at least a hundred vehicles that were heading to a staging area and then to Kuwait/Iraq. At every intersection or overpass for 90 miles citizens were there waving flags and cheering on the troops in the convoy. Some briges/overpasses had at least a hundred people on them waving and cheering. I gave the thumbs up to every military vehicle I passed and also to the patriotic people who were there waving flags and cheering on our troops. I was especially proud to be an American yesterday.

What Sarge may not be able to say, for security reasons, is that his vehicles and equipment are probably on the boat in the picture floating off of Turkey. Turkey is throwing a monkey wrench in the war effort so far by not allowing our troops to use their country as a base for our operations. If the new government in Turkey doesn't change it's mind real soon, those boats will end up in Kuwait, which, if you look at a map is a long voyage from where they are now.

This information is from an article in the Wall Street Journal last week about almost all of Ft. Hood's gear still sitting on boats off of Turkey.

now how much Poggie Bait is out there? nice shot...watching Fox News and seeing how young the Soldiers are brings back strong memories when I 20 when I was over there for round 1... my heart goes out to them and their Families

Am I reading this right? You are not going?

Uncle they've kept us "on a string" this whole time hoping the Turks would change their mind at the last minute and we'd be going in to establish the northern front. As soon as the CINC delivered his ultimatum, I knew the score. Our military planners are some very smart people. Since plan "A" (going in through Turkey) was an obvious no-go, they wouldn't even consider offering an ultimatum unless plan "B" was lined up and ready to execute. About my only hope of getting over there now would be as part of "peace keeping" operations after the fight's over. Ain't much need of Close Air Support for that, because unlike Afghanistan we'll have a fairly large occupying force in Iraq for a while to come.

So yes sir, you're reading it right, apparently I'm not going. I'm engaged right now in trying to recover as many of the donated khukuris as I can so they can be sent on to guys that need 'em. It's hard to explain how I feel right now, a mixture of relief, overwhelmed by a strong feeling of disappointment, sprinkled with twinges of guilt, even shame. This was supposed to be the big one, I owe that alpha hotel an overdue balance from last time I was there, and now I'm not even going to be allowed to go. A good deal for me, so why does it suck so much? 'Cause I didn't join the Air Force to sit on my a$$ and go to staff meetings. I'll calm down after a spell, but right now I'm just not fit company. I'm sure you understand.

We do what we're ordered to do which is not always what we would like to do. Hang in and remember when asked you said ok.

Don't rule out Turkey. Don't think this is the last of the rollouts. Don't let the edge rust on your siru. My last outgoing email was "How 'bout it XO, do I get to go to the prom?" Answer: "More Reserves are being called every day. Stand by." So I guess my point is, Sarge, things can change fast.

BTW, did anyone else notice the Mary Kay Humvee amidship? AAHAHAHAHAHA! Oops sorry, lost it there for just a moment...<chortle>

I kind of feel like I know you a little bit from all your posts Sarge, that and your actions here on the forum. And because of that I'm very sorry that you are not going because from what I know of you, you have a great sense of duty, an even greater love of country and even greater still an almost parental love of your soldiers and seeing their mission completed. I'm sorry that you're not going too:( I don't want any harm to come to you, but I think I understand how you feel about not going too.

I hope that there are MANY other soldiers like you involved in this effort, and if that's the case, I'm not worried at all---and you need not be either.

Sarge:

The Turks were some of the first to offer help in the fight against the Taliban. IIRC, they offered their airbases before NATO invoked Article 5. Also, IIRC, Turkish special forces were involved in the Uzbek areas of Afghanistan.

They aren't with the U.S. on this. It's not what I'd prefer, but unlike certain other nations, their opposition to this fight is honest.

Missed the first one by 3 years and now this.......
I look at the vehicles on deck and wish I was ther with my toolbox I have and still could work on most of the vehicles on that deck. Good luck my friends My prayers and best wishes go with you.

Sarge,

Join the club!

We keep having to spool up for the different operations/JTFs/missions with all the mission planning. Get the staff work done, gear lists ready, gear ready, execute w/in X days. Stop, wait you can’t go because you’re on the force list for XXXX, you can’t be released for XXXXXXXX.

I’ll trade you staff meetings! Different variations of “unpleasantness”. We’ve had to attend multi-service staff meeting/planning sessions in order to plan and publish LOI/OpOrd for the actual planning evolution!!!

Just tell me what you want to get done. I can plan the air battle well enough to tell you what needs to take off and when to support something. I have CWOs and SNCOs to tell me what and who needs to be brought in order to accomplish the fuel, ord., defense, etc. plan. I tell them I need to fuel X birds with Y pounds of fuel, in Z time limits and if it is sustained or surge. Same with the other areas. If you have lift constraints I will give you options on what I can do for you in whatever setting you choose to best support your mission.

We had DODDS and a number of other organizations give very bad info. on the threat condition, the measures to be taken, and the responses. It has caused many problems! We pass the most accurate info. available and we/I keep answering the same questions. It tries the patience!

S/F, Mike

Okay, got my head back on straight. My apologies to all for my selfish whining, there'll be other opportunities to serve. Right now I want to do what I can for those that are over there. Thanks everyone for your understanding.
