30-06 every place here. That's one of the bonuses of having one. And get this, I even found ammo on sale.

Garth, while 30-06 may not be modern or tactical it's not really out of date. The only issue is ammo makers load it a little on the soft side to keep from blowing up old rifles. But the 308 does almost the same thing with a short action until you get to 168+ grain bullets. But don't take my word for it. I loaded a 300 win mag with 190 match kings to 3100 fps...

Wow, I can't believe the guys that are saying .223/5.56. They are purchased within 1 hour of hitting our Wal Mart shelves I am told whenever they trickle in. Gun shops do have them but not the big "bargain" stores.

ammo isn't hard to find anymore down here is southern Utah. the only problem is most stores will limit you to a couple of box's per customer. on the other hand most everyone here reloads so any and all cal. ammo is readily available.

I've probably seen a good 40k rounds of .223/5.56, maybe more

Over here .22 (high velocity bulk packs and even 100 round packs, longs have been decent to get, but people fail to realize there's a freaking difference), 9mm, 40, 45 (acp and Colt), and .380 are damn near impossible to get.

7.62x39 was pretty hard to get for a while too then distributors released control of it and helped availability become close to normal again.

I just watched a guy spend $150 last night at an auction for 300 rds of CCI mini mag 22lr. He must have needed it really bad.

Garth

I shop online and Gun Shows..ammo that I saw a lot of that I have and paid attention to... .338 Federal at a buck a round.

That's the great thing about all of the cartridges listed is that generally they are available in most parts of the country excluding .308 (7.62x51).

There's a couple good reasons for that. One being none of the cartridges listed other than 308 have ever been primarily military cartridges therefore all of the firearms available tend to to be low in capacity and being purely hunting rounds means that you won't put 300 rounds in one range session through your .270 or 30-30 out of a bolt or lever action rifle for example.

And since the majority of the cartridges are well established and used for hunting most hunters have a couple boxes of .270 or whatever the case may be so there's no bumrush on hunting rounds for the most part.

Tough to compare shortages of 5.56, 7.62x39 or 7.62x51 for lots of reasons.

Buying any ammo at any time is good IMO.

I am getting sick of the ammo shortage, it takes all the fun out of shooting. I needed some 300 blackout and called all over creation yesterday before finding someone who would sell me some hornays at $38 for a box of 20... almost 2 bucks a round. I had the same problem with 6.5 creedmoor last month. Even the reloading supplies are in short supply, and I don't have the time to work up new loads for second choice powders that can be scavenged from the internet. Forgive the slightly off topic rant, but I had a bad day with the ammo scalpers.

I have been having a hard time finding Grendel ammo as well. How do you like shooting the Creedmoor. Saw some ammo at Gander Mountain for the Creedmoor the other day. It was around $32 a box.

No doubt about the 30-06. But WWII was almost 70 years ago and even so the 1903 Springfield and the M1 Garand weren't high capacity and those were the primary infantry rifles not the BAR. My point was that for the better part of a century these rounds excluding the .308 have not been primarily involved in the military.

Point taken though.

Thanks for the ammo tip. The Creedmoor is outstanding; trajectory/ballistic coefficient/velocity like a 300 win mag, kick like a .243, with a 10 round mag (bolt gun) and short action. 6.5 Creedmoor also has the most accurate factory ammo available of the 6.5s. Additionally, it has the advantage of having a shorter case than the .260 so bullets can be seated farther out and it, runs better from ar 10 mags. The only reason to consider .260 or 6.5 lapua imo at this point is the Lapua brass. The gun I have it chambered in is an AI AX which is the finest rifle I have ever shot; it is just different; you have to try one to understand.

I love the Grendel though for the AR-15 platform; I never understood why it did not become more popular. In many ways it is superior to the more popular 6.8, and more accurate too from what I have read. I always liked yours from the Grendel thread.:)

Picked up 35 boxes of .Federal 300 Win. Mag at a gun show for $20 a box..I'll be looking for 5.56 and 7.62 at Indy tomorrow.

I mostly see hunting calibers like .270 and 30.06 around here. 5.56 is becoming more available, but not like it was last year at this time.

I might not have quite described my original question well or maybe people just did the poll and didn't read it. I have seen .223 and 5.56 at my gun shops and gun shows around here too. However I have not seen .308, .30-30, or .223 at the three WalMarts around me for over 6 months. (or 9mm or .22LR either.) Just heard at the hunt club last night that they are all out of trap shells too.
