OT: What Handgun and Rifle combo would you pair up with your Khukuri?

I'd quit following this thread, to my loss. Now it's veered into mil surplus rifles/old mil rifles.

I'm not mechanically inclined, but some truly happy times for me are getting out the "Firearms Assembly/Disassembly" books and taking down an old Moisin-Nagant, MAS-36 or even an SVT-40.

Munk: The Schmidt is sort of a mechanical curiosity. I don't own one, but watched a friend disassemble his. Interesting, but I don't know if I'd care to own one for anything other than the novelty.

I'm wondering if i got two if I could cut one down to a usable size like a mauser 98 can be trimmed. Today I'll look that up and scope mounting with the links provided.

Mechanical oddity aside, by all reports the weapon is very accurate and well made, in the 'old style'. That's worth having for it's own sake. Though I am wondering why it would be worth having more than a persian mauser, for example.
Gun loon stuff. I go there just because...its there!

Or should I just stop buying Khukuris, pay Bill all I owe, and save up for a Ruger .480?

Munk:

The last time that I looked at them (3 years ago?), Schmidts were about two to three times as expensive as most surplus Mausers. Although unlike many of the Mausers out there, all of the Swiss guns that I saw were in excellent shape.

IIRC the Swiss did make a carbine version at one point, so going short barrel is probably feasible.

The K-31 is _the carbine version._ Before that was the 1911 and it was a very long rifle. Not only was the barrel longer, the action was longer as well. A K-31 actually in the had doesn't feel long or heavy.

And like spence said, K-31's tend to be in excellent mechanical condition because they were issued to one soldier who took care of it and took it home. It is more like buying an old, well cared for hunting rifle than a military rifle. Most surplus has considerably worse bores than the K-31's. Although some of the K-31's have pretty bad stocks. The collectors claim it is because the Swiss left them outside their tents with their butts in the snow. So most buttstocks have quite a bit of water damage. They are still very sound or they would have been repaired but they don't look nearly as nice as the metal. Some people have done some very nice refinishing of the stocks. I did that to my early walnut model and it looks much nicer now. Although I tried to get it to still look "original." No plastic finish on my rifles!

For $89 and free shipping, what else are you going to buy, keep as long, and enjoy as much? You can't even buy a Ruger 10/22 at Wal-Mart for that kind of money!

Ah. With munk talking about cutting it down, I figured that the K-31 was one of the long rifles. $89? Like I said it was some time back that I looked, but I recall the price being in the $200-300 range?

What are they like to fire? How does the 7.5 Swiss compare with other 30/33 caliber rounds of that period?

Careful, tulsamal has already told me I tread on blasphemy!! The 31 is a stronger action and can be loaded to .308 levels, if I am not mistaken.

I promise I will cut nothing down until I see what it handles like. I probably won't anyway, as my enthusiasm for projects has waned over the years, directly related to all the unfinished work around this darn house!

OK, I can play this game.

Here's three of my favorites without a knife. Sorry! K-31 with beech stock. Finnish VKT M39. Springfield Armory M1 Garand.

And then we have a Ruger Super Redhawk with Leupold 2x, a S&W M29 6" (pinned and recessed with box), and a Ruger MkII. The knife is an HI Gelbu Special.

And finally we have a Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine with a pre-WWII German scope in German claw mount. With a beautiful Ganga Ram.

Hmmm..I'm WAYYYY out of my league with all these gun guys, but:

1)Les Baer thunder Ranch with tritium night sights, .45 carbine (by most reliable maker)

2) no idea

3)stainless pump shotgun (read this in someone's post--sounds like a plan for salt water), stainless Les Baer .45 Concept VI

Khuks:

1) 18" GS (18-20oz)
2) 15" AK
3) 18" Kobra (maybe a 15" siru or gelbu because of tight quarters)

They are in a special place so I don't even worry about metal detectors.

Umm... Pappy, this doesn't have anything to do with Christopher Walkin's character in Pulp Fiction and his watch does it? ;) :p :D

(Edited to add)

NICE guns and khuks in above pics guys!!!:) :)

There's ways to bury them and confuse detecttion. If it gets that bad, my hope is mass civil disobedience redefines our nation- back to where it should have been.
