A few years ago I weighed 700 pounds (you didn't mis-read that.) I had gastric bypass surgery. Since then I have lost over 300 pounds and am still going down. One of the side effects of the surgery is that I can't ever drink soda pop again. Another side effect is that I can't ever drink alcohol again. I haven't drank any booze since 1986 anyway, so giving up soda pop was much more difficult for me. However, I'd say my life is worth it. I'm still way too fat and need to keep going on losing weight, but I'm much more healthy and active than I was before.
The village is dry because like many Eskimo villages, the rates of alcoholism run ridiculously high. Of course it does no good because all that happens is that people make their own. I would bet the rate of alcohol consumption is higher here than in the rest of the states.
