OT Winter Boots Sorel/Kamik

I wear Sorels, but for the type of thing you are talking about- hiking, I wonder if Thomas isn't right about heel movement. Any of a number of insulated military/hiking/ hunting boots might be better because they're designed differently. Check the Cabelas cate.

Several years ago I bought Cabela's (at that time) top of the line boot from their catalog. It was called the Canada boot by Meindl (spelling), a German company. They said to buy your regular size, not one size over, and they seem to accomodate for that. Anyone ever hear of this brand?

I ordered them in Size 12 but probably should have ordered 13's as my feet were on the borderline at the time, and the extra weight has not helped.

They are excellent boots, and very warm. My only complaint being the uppers towards the front only are beautiful leather which is very easily scratched by rocks, stones, the under side of brake and clutch pedals, etc. I don't know what they were thinking, as they specifically mentioned how durable the uppers were. In any case, they are a good hunting and cold weather boot. At the time they ran a couple of hundred bucks, but now I see Cabela's doesn't even carry that brand any longer, and everything they do carry is a lot less money, so it must have been an import thing.

Regards,

Norm

Meindl is a great company - Meindl, Hanwag and Lowa used to be THE producers of German Hiking and mountaineering boots. Hanwag and Lowa were owned by brothers (HAns WAGner and LOrenz WAgner) - but Lowa is sold to an Italian group I think. Their shoes are good - and often expensive. Their (Meindl´s) winter program of shoes can be seen here (in German).

Andreas, thanks for the link! I clicked on "Jagd" (hunting I think) and there's my boot! They call it the "Taiga" now, but it sure looks like the boot I bought from the Cabela's catalog almost 10 years ago.

Hopefully I can still find an importer in the US when it comes time to replace them.

Thanks again!

Hey Andreas,

Since you're in Europe, have you tried the Italian brand called AKU? They're as good as, if not better than Scarpa.

I myself procured a pair of the newer (2003) generation AKU Trails; Split-suede leather lowers, Air 8000 (high-tech, incredibly breathable synthetic) uppers, Full Gore-Tex lining, Vibram Sole and Rubber toe bumper.

They are fantastic boots. I've worn them everywhere and they're even light enogh to wear just for everyday walking around town.
