Ok, I recently got a Tomahawk from Bill Buxton. (Very cool hawk)

It has a plain jane hickory handle, and I have a curly maple and an ash handle on the way to me. (Both unfinished) I will be working with them to make interesting and nice handle(s). I ordered them so when I screw up on one, I have others to work with, and so I can also see how each wood looks after I am done with it.

My question is that I want to make nice looking handles for it, but I am fairly inexperienced with wood working on this caliber. I am thinking for starters that I should begin learning and practicing staining. I am thinking of striping or banding different colored stained stripes. Anyone have any tips for me on this? Or staining wood in general? Any websites out there that could help me learn the basics?

Also, anyone seen anything interesting on wood handled implements that stuck out in your mind? I have a bunch of pictures of ideas that I would not mind trying, but would still love to have more to look at. =)

Thanks guys.
