OT: Wrist watches?

The Luminox Marine Series sounds exactly like what you need. Stainless steel, great crystal (had one almost a year and still haven't even got the slightest little scratch), and you could take a bath in 300-degree water, and you still couldn't fog it up inside the watch.

Plus, Luminox's "glow in the dark" features don't need light to "revive" them.

For what its worth, Luminox makes an outstanding watch if you want super bright markers on the dial and hands.

OK, so what about those of us that don't like wearing stuff on our wrists ? ;)

I've got an L.L. Bean Field Watch that's lasted quite well, but wearing anything on my wrist kinda bugs me. The only "field" type pocket watches I've seen are made by Victorinox , but it's hard to find good prices on them. Anyone have suggestions or comments ?

Chris go over here and do a search for watches. You will probably get more info than you ever imagined.
Timepieces have been discussed to death over there.:p :)

Are the Suun. better than G shocks?? Maybe I should get one if they are!!

Yes and no Jim, yes they are better, but not, IMHO, that much better to justify the difference in cost for what you'd normally use a watch for (they ain't giving them Suuntos away cheap). I can't wear either because I'm saddled with an "analog brain". I could wreck a car in the time that it takes me to look at a digital watch and make any sense of it. Besides, I don't care for any watch that includes plastic in the band or case. Give me steel, everything else falls apart on my wrist.

A lot of guys who work underground here, including me, swear by the Timex 100m/200m Ironmans. I have beat the living hell out of them and have never had one stop working.

I have had three in eight years, and the first was retired because it was just too beat up and butt-ugly. I had a pin pull out of a bezel on the second one, but it still 'kept on tickin'. My latest is one of those 200m jobbies. It's been good so far. The only thing is you have to by a nylon strap right away because the plastic ones are garbage.

I like the Victorinox watches as sporty/dressy ones. I got spindly arms so I like smaller bezels. Wittnauer is also a nice affordable Swiss watch.

Ok! I picked up a watch. I went with a Citizen Eco-Drive dive watch! It is built like a tank out of solid stainless steel and has a oversized crown to make it easier to set. Best of all it will never need a battery as it is solor powered and disigned to last "forever". No military time though but most watches like this did not have this option. I found a few automatics that had military time but the jewler said automatics need to be serviced every 3 to 5 years to keep them running well and it will cost at the low end $100 for this service...to much maintenance for me. So I went with the Eco Drive. I guess with "time" we will see how it holds up! Looks like Ranger288's has held up really in some harsh conditions so I think I made a good choice! Already wacked it once working on the truck and no problem!

One thing to be aware of on the Ecodrive and solar-powered "never-need-a-battery" watches:

They DO have a battery (which is what the solar or motion thingie recharges), and eventually that battery will give out and refuse to take a charge. To my knowledge, based NOT on personal experience but only on what I have read in several places on the Web, that battery once dead cannot be replaced, so the watch is then totally gonzo. It's worth asking about.

Personally, I find that normal batteries for quartz watches usually last several years, so I don't mind the occasional change. I would love to have an "automatic" mechanical movement watch, though, where motion winds a spring. Those never need a battery -- but they will eventually need servicing.

Well, can't believe someone actually took my advice! ;)

I have been very happy with my Citizen Eco-Drive dive watch. Not only is it very very rugged and can really take a beating and never need a new battery-but it also is a good looking watch. I was amazed that even after 5 years, last night I noticed how bright the hands still glow.

You made a good choice!!

BTW, what model did you get?? With the rubber strap or with the Stainless Steel Strap? I now have one of those nylon fabric straps with the velcro. This seems to be the most comfortable and had weraing for me.

Nice watch. Keeps good time. Had a rolex I got from my grandfather's estate. Didn't know that they don't keep time worth a damn!!!! That never needs winding or battery crap is great, but is no substitute for good 'old fashioned' quartz.

I wondered about that and Citizen said that the type of secondary battery used in these watches will never go bad being charged over time. I guess we will see.

Ranger, I got the stainless band with a black face. The actual model is BM00560-57E. Thanks for the advice everyone. I did look at the Luminox watches but after reading on the forums about how people had trouble with them and the company would not do anything under warranty so I won't deal with a company like that! I guess I have delt to much with H.I.!:D
