I've seen some amazing work by Razor Edge Knives / Josh.
Nice CRKT, it's a light saber with that sharpness!

He has done a regrind on an Obake and a Hissatsu (fixed) for me. He does awesome work and there is just something about the Japanese Tanto that looks great with a regrind.

That is such a beastly looking knife...I like!

I have the smaller version and it's an interesting blade.

That is one of the sharpest knives out of the box let alone the new edge. Handle with care my friend.

Wouldn't a regrind potentially alter the heat treat?

Serious question btw, I know nothing about the process being done.

As long as your not cheap about belts and be careful to avoid letting it get too hot (few hundred degrees for most), you'll be fine. Almost every knifemaker does some grinding after heat treat. Nothing to worry about unless its Jim Bob in the garage with a grinder lol.

Yes this knife is part time self defense EDC the other self defense EDC I have is the Yojimbo 2. Depends on what I am wearing as to which one comes with me for the day. The Otanashi is now so freakishly sharp I find myself being very very careful with it even tightened up the pivot a bit to lessen the chance of it opening in my pocket. I am betting the knife would now penetrate kevlar its so sharp still with enough steel left to retain good tip strength. Josh also told me about not letting the knife get to hot during the grind so that was a relief. I have 10 knives currently being done by him for one thing or another have yet to be disappointed by RSK

I keep reading good comments and feedback on Razor Edge Knives. But no one gives the website or username for this "Josh" person. He's got to be a BF member. What is his contact info? Will someone post it?

go to the Knifemaker For Sale part of the forum then click on the Custom Services For Sale sub forum. Razor Edge Knives will be one of the first few service providers listed. Josh is the owner operator you can contact him through that thread by clicking his link or leave a comment on the thread. Yes he is a member here

Serious question as I'm a little new the the whole knife life. Why a regrind? I own that same knife and it was razor sharp when I got it. What does a regrind do for you? Again not being a smart ass I'm asking out of ignorance.

Mike

it makes the cutting edge able to take steeper angles like say 15 degrees per side or even less without having to remove much metal at all. Think of it as a scalpel with a spine 4 times thicker than normal. Regrinds are often the best way to get the sharpest edge possible out of the strongest blade possible. There is actually plenty of steel left on the Otanashi and yes it is the most terrifyingly sharp knife I have ever had. So sharp you wouldnt even feel it if you accidentally cut yourself open with it. Why do it? I live in a shady part of town and a gun is NOT always the best option. If Im gonna pull the Otanashi on an attacker/robber Im going to use it. Before it actually was not that sharp and sharpening the asian tanto design is beyond my skills. If I use it in self defense it better pierce and slice to the upmost of its ability and now with a regrind it does. I have had to defend myself with a knife before so Im also going on lessons learned

Just saw this thread... Thanks Bryan for the mad props =)

I have converted my grinder to be fluid cooled, so now the blade doesn't even get hot really... I also use sharp belts, throwing away old ones after only a few uses, so they are very efficient and cool grinding.

Bryan has it right below, I have a thread in the knifemaker section =)
