Otf vs auto for daily use

Happened with multiple protech models, tr3 and tr4 (2 of them). In a firm grasp it would bounce off the stop pin. Protech was not able to fix. They did offer a replacement or refund each time. I ended up with keeping a godson and a godfather that work fine. Even the boker Kalashnikov has been perfect.
I’m glad to hear that Protech made it square with you, I’ve been looking at their autos lately and will probably be ordering one when I decide what I want.

I agree with most of what you said, however blowing out with a compressor will still leave a lot of oil residue inside the mechanism which is actually necessary. Just blowing out the oil will not remove it all. If they run bone dry you will have problems.
Yep I made a typo there. I meant to say if it’s not clean or is dry(no oil) then it won’t work. Blowing it out with air compression after oil saturation removes most of the dirt and debris but will leave adequate amount of lubricant. You and I are definitely on the same page.

Has anyone on this forum thread have or has tried a Microtech Conbat Troodon OTF knife?

Having a Ultratech a much smaller OTF then the Conbat Troodon, and much easer to operate meaning the opening and closing of the knife.

Having that said "posted" i bought a Conbat Troodon this Microtech OTF has a much stronger spring Microtech tells us it has to be strong to make sure the blad locks in when opening, but i found it is really hard on thumb and hand to get open.

You quickly also find that to much oil will just cause the knife to not open or will partly deploy the blade, i found that deoiling it with Hoppes Blast and Clean with a good blowing of compressed air gets knife back to normal.

Not telling people to run their knife dry but i find the Hoppes Blast and Clean leaves a slick surface inside knife and this works for me.

I like this knife but find it's just to hard to operate for an EDC knife and if you read the Microtech community forums you find that i am not alone with having problems with this knife.

There's no comparison for me, autos all the way. Or regular, folding knife.
I don't want to wash, oil, and use compressed air on my knives and other small tools. If you like "safe queens" then OTF's are perfect. But for a real EDC that consistently opens and closes without fussy cleaning rituals, stick with standard folder.

I have dropped pocketknives in sand and dirt, and they still work flawlessly. Fill a Microtech with sand or mud, and see how well it works!
