Let's look at it this way. Heatbath/Parks won't sell you their oil. Houghton will sell you theirs, but 5 gallons of Houghto-Quench K will cost me about $180 including shipping. There have got to be more companies making quench oil than just two. I found a spec sheet for some Conoco branded oils claiming a 9 to 12 second quench speed, but haven't found any place that sells it. There's McMaster-Carr's 11 second oil that is readily available, but more of a medium/fast oil than a true fast oil like the K or #50. Do Mobil, Texaco, Exxon make a quench oil? Where do machine shops get oil for heat treating parts? You can't tell me every mom-and-pop machine shop buys oil by the 55 gallon drum. Any ideas?

You might try looking up "Oil Jobbers" in your area. Many years ago I found a Jobber in my area that had Texaco type A that I was looking for. Other Jobbers had other brands of quench oils that were the "equivalent" of what I really wanted. Who knows, enough calls may yield what you're looking for. The only downfall to all of this is that I had to buy the oil by the barrel. I was able to sell off all but the 10 gallons that I wanted for myself though.

Good luck!

I was able to pick up 5 gallons of Gulf Super Quench 70 for $50 locally. It is A fast oil. I found it by calling all of the oil suppliers in the phone book and asking for heat treating oil or the names of who might have them.

I got in touch with a rep who is trying to track down the specs for Fast Quench. I'll let y'all know.

I have 5 gallons of unobtainium headed my way :)

I found a supplier in Dallas who will sell 5 gallon pails. He's got an oil on hand that is this week's brand of the Gulf/Chevron/Duratherm Superquench 70, a 10 second oil. Price was 47.25 per 5 gallon pail. They also ship FedEx.

He also said that he has a recipe to formulate a 7/8 second oil. We didn't discuss exact price on that one, but he said it was a dollar or so a gallon more.

Company is Maxim Oil 817-654-4456. Can't remember the tech guy's name, but he knew exactly what I was talking about.

Im still using a 5 gal pail of Shell Voluta that K&G used to sell. I'm not sure exactly which flavor of Voluta it is, but it works so I don't worry about it. I am not sure if K&G sells it anymore but it might be something to add to the mix if you find it available. I think its parrafin-based if I remember right....

Maxim oil now has Parks 50 in a 5 gallon pail for $72.50 plus shipping. Maxim is a Heatbath dealer just south of Ft. Worth.

Is this actually parks 50 or an equivilent. 72.50 for five gallons is less per gallon than I was quoted when buying a 600 gallon bladder, by a bit

I don't understand that one Bill. Last summer Kelly Cupples quoted me $125, plus shipping, for 5 gallons of Parks 50. That'd be $25 per gallon.

I received a bucket this afternoon. The Technical data sheet with it is from Park Metallurgical Corporation. It list it as 50 quench oil with a nickel ball time @ 100 F as 7-9 seconds. I will try to scan the sheet and post it for you. This is the first oil like this I have purchased. I asked for parks 50 and was told that this was it.

Sounding good Craig. How was it shipped to you? I know you're in Texas, as is this distributor. How much did the freight run you, just being next door, so to speak?

Thanks, Phil

The shipping was $19 and change. They shipped it to me Fed-X. Right at $100 with sales tax and shipping.
