Other fast quench oils?

I don't understand that one Bill. Last summer Kelly Cupples quoted me $125, plus shipping, for 5 gallons of Parks 50. That'd be $25 per gallon.

Hi Phil, I contacted heatbath/parks about quench oil. and was quoted a price of around 20 bucks a gallon for quench oil 50 IF I bought it in a 600 gallon bladder. If I bought a pallet of 5 gallon buckets it was slightly higher. this coming directly from heatbath. I bought from Kelly instead. My thinking is that he had to buy the same quantity that I would have had to buy and pay shipping to his shop and then he needs to make a profit and pay for his time. 125.00 is way less than 12,000.00 and a 20% pecent profit is not that much of a markup in my thinking.

If this is, and it seems to be, parks 50 oil then it is a great deal.

Here is a scan of the 1st page of the data sheet I received with this oil.

Have any of you guys pursued this? I sent Lee a couple of emails since this was posted, but hadn't heard back from him. So I phoned him today. He promptly followed up by emailing me a quote. Yup, $72.50 for 5 gallons. I just have to come up with $147.89 to ship it FedEx to me in Hawaii.

He said he still has five 5-gallon buckets on hand and will be ordering another barrel with their next warehouse truck.

Just sent him an email as well, hoping to hear some good news! Wonder what it'll cost to ship it up to OR...

Do you think Transformer oil would work? How would I got about testing quench time?

I actually know a guy well that uses transformer oil.Go to church with him.Hes retired from the electric company. I can say his knives always seem to test out to the 58-59rc he shoots for after temper. He heat treats by eye too, but hes been doing it for about 25+ years that way..I know he uses it for 1095 so it must be fairly fast..
Your the only other person Ive ever heard even mention transformer oil for a quench..
.
Transformer oil is a very highly refined mineral oil that is also a coolant and designed to be stable at high temps. Flash point is around 285*
