Other techniques for leather dying?

The black "dye" using vinegar is the reaction between the iron acetate you made & the tannin in the leather forming iron tannate.

why not just buy leather that is pre dyed black. all the leather supplier's have it. it's the same quality leather.

what about first dying brown...then black?

I've got my first vinegar dye test piece drying right now. Is there any chance that the acetic acid (if is still acetic acid at this point) will dammage the blade? Also, will the smell ever go away? It smells like rotting seafood right now.

If you have some non-dead vinager still in the mix, if you just leave it there it can damage the blade, but what I do is spray it real good with windex when I'm done and then clean with soap and water, just to make sure that doesn't become a problem.

Hmmm. I was kind of hoping I could dye it and form it at the same time. I guess it'll just take a little longer than I had hoped.
Thanks,

Chris
