Other-than-battery-power watches?

Check out the 200m Seiko auto divers. There's a bunch of variations and they can often be had for under $200.00. If you can't find one that's exactly what you want, contact Bill Yao of www.mkiiwatches.com and have him customize one for you. I just got my first one (SKXA35) to wear as a beater to take some strain off my Omega and am totally in love. I'm gonna have Bill put a sapphire crystal on it and am already thinking about another variant.

These things are addictive.

That's one UGLY knife, though. You just gotta fix that.

;) I know .. it was one I purchased prior to finding this site.. I liked the flipper on it .. since then I have acquired a CRKT M16-04 and a Kershaw Leek.. Thanks for the comments on the watch .. I agree I like the big numbers also . very easy to see in any light

About Bill Yao's watches...

I have the site saved and visit there often, so I'm reasonably familiar with the parts options he offers. Here's my question: does he do anything with the movements in regards to accuracy?

In other words, will a Seiko 7S26 or an ETA 2824-2 from Yao be any more accurate than one from anywhere else, or will the dial just look better?

From what I can tell, Bill is more into the aesthetics than repair/maintainance. There does seem to be several variants of the ETA2824 movement though and he specifies the Elaboree version for the watches he custom builds.

Yeah, see I'd really like a Black Monster with a MoD 300 day/date dial and plongeur hands.

But when I read that the Monsters may routinely go around +20 seconds a day...well that's too much for me. :(

I was hoping Yao's shop tightened them up a bit.

The SKXA35 I got has the same movement as The Black Monster (7S26) and mine has been much more accurate than that. I'd say it's varied less than 30 secs over the last ten days (lost).

I woudn't worry about accuracy with a Seiko auto.

I have a Citizens Eco-Drive, and so does my wife. They seem like great watches, although I only wear mine occationally. Mine's nowhere near as fancy as Bob Q's.

I'd like one of the kinetic watches too, but I can't hardly justify two expensive watches that'll only be worn twice a month... They just aren't suitable for wearing to work on the drill rig.

I bought my mom a really nice one a year or so ago. She immediately put it in a drawer for a few months and when she took it out it didn't work at ALL! Citizen told her she shouldn't have stored it in complete darkness and let it run completely dry. They gave her REALLY good service, though, and quickly fixed her watch free of charge.

I just won this on Ebay. Brand new model. Just came out.
Solar. It's a atomic clock receiver too. Has pretty much any feature I could want. I don't like the plastic band, but...

I'm still trying to get a Seiko Kinetic and a Citizen Eco, but those go for a lot of money, even on Ebay. :(

Hey FullofLead, I have that exact watch. You'll love it!

One thing that i never like is that rubber bands are always so stiff. When I put one on it's still conformed to some old mold instead of my wrist, and it's uncomfortable.

You can remedy this by boiling some water and holding JUST THE BAND part in to heat it up. Then when it's hot and more pliable, roll the band up really tightly and hold it there till it settles (or dunk it in some cold water). When you're finished the band will have conformed to a more round fit, which is a LOT more comfortable.

Enjoy your G!

Oh, COME ON! I can't boil the WATCH? :D

I may actually try it.
What's this Rhino band I keep hearing about. All I know is that it's rubber, so I don't think I'd like that either.

.

The Rhino is nylon fabric, not rubber. It's a heavier-duty version of the NATO strap.

Problem with many G shocks though is that, for as big as they are, the lug width is actually to narrow to fit the Rhino.

I don't know if that's the case with this model, but I've run in to this in the past.

After reading this thread, I wonder does anyone make a nice automatic with a cloth(nylon) band? I used to think I prefered steel banded watches until I remember the days where I wore a nylon banded wrist watch. It was the watch I literally wore everyday and everywhere until I lost it during a move. Steel bands and rubber bands I pretty much toss into a drawer after a few days.

I'd really prefer an analog to digital and with a price under $50. It looks like I could just purchase a Seiko 5 automatic and simply change the bands...which I just may do. I've always wanted a Seiko automatic and the prices for the "5 Series" seems to make them a very good bargain.

Almost all watches can be put on any strap or bracelet with the right width. Open up that drawer you've been throwing watches into, pick out the watch you like best regardless of the band that's on it now, and put a nylon strap on it.

If you don't want to learn how to deal with spring pins let the jeweler change it for you -- usually no charge if you buy the strap at the same time. Even the girl at the Walmart jewelry counter can do that, though she might scratch your case.

I once had a digital Timex with a nylon band. The band got ~really~ skanky from sweat.

The metal band on my eco-drive keeps pulling my hairs. :(

Nylon straps need to be washed from time to time, just like anything made of fabric worn next to your skin. Buy two or more and just throw them in the washing machine.

Hair-pulling is pretty common with watch bracelets. Some are worse than others....

K-Mart, Target, Walgreens, etc. all have spinning racks of nylon & pleather watch bands on top of their jewelry couners.
