OUCH !!!!! Man this hurt

Kinda reminds me of cutting my index finger in half on my very first blade grind. Actually just looking at a belt grinder usually reminds me of it. There is pain to be had in the shop. I am glad all you got was some hurt instead of a permanent lose. I do take it serious and respect the equipment more than before.

Bruce, This must have happened after you called me the last time. You said you were having problems getting it welded but didn't say it kicked you ass. Glad to hear it didn't do anymore damage and you still got all your diggets....... Ray

This is my first post in this place, please be gentil...:D
I sure glad that I found my way to this Forum!:p

Well back to the story...
My uncle, who lives in northern Finland, has a house witch is still heated with wood. One fine evening he was starting the fire and made some splinters with an axe. Dont know what he was thinking but he cutted off his left thumb right from the second joint! He managed to get to the hospital in time and the fine doctors were able to fix his hand/thumb.
After been few months in sick leave and vigorous physiotherapie he went back to the boiler room and took the axe... only to repeate what he did months ago.
AUTS! The doctor, holding his laughter, told him that he will not put it back for third time so he should be more carefull in the future. My uncle was cursing like ???? when he was telling me this story.

Dang Bruce -- sorry to hear about that, hopefully everything is alright.

When that damascus gets to my house, I'll kick it's ass for you. :)

Howdy There..!
Hate to agree with everyone, but you should get it checked just in case things aren't lined up right. If it heals back and isn't right could cause some problem down the road, might get stiff or not work. Good luck....!

Just a thought in case it does fall off. How would a Necker look with a stabalized "Pinky" handle look!:footinmou

Hey that would be a way to re-attach the finger.Just hollow out the bone in the hand and make that the sheath for the blade and that way when sheathed your hand looks normal:D :D :D Then when someone gets smart you could pull your little finger on them:eek: :D :D

Man,only a knifemaker would talk like this.
Bruce

Oh yea,the finger was just badly bruised, should have been stabilized for a while to make it heal faster, but not me,just get back to work and bump it on everything, yea thats what I did.

Bruce,
I'm no knifemaker but I hope you will ice that finger regularly for the first 48 hours, and even through to the first week since the trauma. If it doesn't improve, please, please see a doctor to get it looked at. It's quite difficult to diagnose what the extent of trauma is w/o seeing it in pictures or in person. Swollen n bent probably means the tendons got injured - the curled up position is basically your body trying to avoid pain. Your bones probably had a good knocking too - depending on trauma, could have hairline fissures.

Times are really tight now, I can understand if we choose to self-medicate. Personally I'm in that position myself and can't afford my bp pills BUT I wouldn't hesitate if it involved my hands, if I were a knifemaker.

(actually, just as a thought - why is it that there are no doctors who will offer "free" medical service to those of us who are really broke? it's always $ immediately after treatment! all other professionals bill you later...)

Take care,
spyken

The finger is usable now, still a little touchy at times if I hit it on something just rite, but for the most part it is business as usual now.Heck time to forge some more now that I can hold the tongs good again.
Since the weather is cooling down again the itch to stay in the shop is really bad:D  :D But Donna has other ideas for me :D But it is time to work now that I can.
Bruce
