About 3 or 4 days ago, I bought my first motorcycle.
I bought a 1986 Kawasaki KLR 600.

It's not on the road yet, but its an Enduro so I can use it a bit like a dirtbike.
I grew up with 4-wheelers, so Im learning "the ways of the dirtbike".
(I get my motorcycle license next Sunday, the first.)
So, here I am cruising through the field at about 35-40 MPH, checking my knife every 50 feet, worried that Its gonna fall out of my pocket.
And then an idea strikes.
"Why not put it in the bag?"
So I do.
See, the inside of the bag has bolts holding it down. And really hard plastic as the base.

I almost put my cell phone in there too. (Thank god I didnt!)
"It wont bounce around in there too much. Shouldnt hurt it anyways." Ignorant, ignorant thoughts.
I go on, cruising around. bouncing around a bit, but nothing out of the ordinary.
I ride for about 10-15 minutes more in my fields after putting it in the bag and then drive it home.
Just as I park it in my barn, I walk to the back to retrieve my knife.
Horror strikes. Heart sinks.
The clip is all sorts of beat up.
The handles have deep cuts.
Some blade coating is scraped.
It looks like I tried to skip it like a rock across pavement.
I cleaned it up a bit, looks quite a bit better now, (Seen in these pictures) but its not out-of-box condition anymore.
The pictures dont show it as much as in person. Some pictures, the scratches and cuts can barely be seen. Look towards the blade side of the handle.
I guess the desert-tan hides scratches pretty good. I cant imagine what this would look like if it was colored anodized aluminum.
Just thinking how it was slamming around in that bag, hitting the bolt heads, over and over again..
In the bag like-new, out like 3 years old.

As a plus, Im not as afraid to use it now. :)
Thanks for listening to my sob-story.

Good news: You sir have an Adamas and it is meant to look like that! They are tough as nails so no worries. I have had a few knives get dinged like that and it turned out to be good in a way. It is hard for be use knew knives, but once they are properly "broken in" I feel like I can use away. Enjoy your Adamas, it has character and a cool story now.

I'll agree with that! It was pretty unexpected though.

i got mine in my pocket today, and funny you talked about falling out of your pocket....other than the weight of the knife and gravity i have no trust in my pocket clip. no tension, and finish is too smooth to pinch the clip and try to tighten it up. so i can get where you thought bag was the better idea than pocket completely.

good news is flash forward 4 years of using said knife and it's look like that anyways, unless you kept it like a fragile egg only using it to cut paper once in awhile, and tucked away safe in the sock drawer every night protected from the evils of things that can mark it up and scratch it.:) so you got nothing to be sad about unless you are a keep it safe collector and not a user? i doubt ya' are though since you took it riding with ya.

The way you worded the damage, it sounded real bad. Those pics, that's nothing... enjoy the beauty marks.

I'd take some sandpaper to that bad boy to take the sting out of the scratches.

Frankly, I was expecting worse!

Yeah, it just looks lived in now. Knives like the Adamas and Contego aren't meant for sheltered lives in safes, they're meant to be beat on and to keep coming back for more . . .

If you' re still gonna carry that knife in a couple of years, you' re going to think of that motorcycle ride every time you look at it:) Remember, every scratch, every ding adds character and makes your knife to what it really is: your knife.

If you're planning on keeping it, no big deal. If you're gonna sell it, a little money lost. I feel for you though. I'd much rather have put those marks on it getting a tough job done than the way it happened. Oh well. Time to put it into action!

Did you get the nylon pouch that the Adamas comes with? If so, I would keep it in that and put it on my belt next ride. No way it would fall out of that thing.

I can certainly understand the desire/compulsion to keep something brand-new in pristine condition for as long as possible. This is a natural occurrence among people who believe in taking care of the things they own. But the problem is that this desire/compulsion often causes people to not use their knives as they intended to because they are afraid of damaging the knife. But once the knife gets some scratches, the "spell" of over-protectiveness is broken and people feel free to use the knife as intended and without fear of ruining it's pristine appearance.

Congratulations, you broke the "spell" early and now you can really enjoy using the hell out of that knife without fear, just as it was designed to be used :) .

You should offer that as a custom knife finish! The ole bag on the back of the dirt bike finish. So people won't feel the need to baby their knives and can just enjoy using them

You guys are right. I scratched some memories into it.
The pictures don't show the true scratches.

It doesn't even take me six months to have a knife looking like that. Not a big fan of Benchmades coating, but hey that's an overbuilt monster and you should cover those scars up with....more scars! Go ahead and get down and dirty with that thing.

Get yourself a Spec Ops 'Rat Pack' which is what I use.
Throw your cell phone, knife and anything else in and it will fit perfectly in the bike bag.
Additionally, the Cerakote will eventually start to wear off the Adamas scales and look like the photo below.

Tempting…
I may look into that.
Until then, I'm going to put foam down or get a padded bag to throw it in. Maybe cut a slit in a small pillow and stuff my stuff in it.
