P is for Pocket Clip

Today we take ‘em for granted but once upon a time your “tactical” one-hand openers came with nylon sheaths (if you were lucky) as their preferred mode of carry (bit of trivia: even the first Sebenzas didn’t have clips.) In fact, even when pocket clips started to become more prevalent some manufacturers still included said nylon sheaths along with knives featuring them - bonus!:p

Speaking of carry modes we’re so used to the huge variety of models offering multiple clip orientations that it’s hard to fathom that when clips did start to become more ubiquitous there was really only one carry option: right-hand tip-down. The first tip-up knives I can really remember seeing were the Zytel models with integral molded clips from Spyderco and Cold Steel - most production and custom knife makers mainly stuck with the t-d configuration for quite awhile.

Another bit of trivia: At first a number of custom makers in the early/mid nineties were using Benchmade (and the odd Spyderco) clips complete with the patent markings on their knives. In fact, it wasn’t completely unheard of to find one that still bore faint factory markings even after being ground or media blasted - at least until they were able to source apparently hard to get sterile versions. Of course it wasn’t too terribly long before makers did finally start to devise other options. I do recall Chris Reeve and Bob Terzuola being the first I was aware of to actually integrate legit milled Ti clips that didn’t appear as if they were just a screwed on afterthought into their designs (so there’s yet another one we owe them for...) Man, have we come a long way since those dark ages. Heck, nowadays we’ve even got a myriad of custom pocket clips being sold all by themselves.

Anyway, enough ancient history...let’s hear it for the pocket clip - a humble little piece of bent metal that changed everything!

Then...
