Was over in the Spyderco Forum earlier this morning and saw a thread involving a gent who tried to go to Six Flags, and wound up with a sudden change of plans when he met the metal detectors and rent-a-cops, and was forced to change plans. A couple of other folks chimed in about business establishments that forbade the carry of knives, an' that got me ta thinkin'...(very few things do that ya' know)

would it be plausible to start up a thread somewhere listing businesses, tourist spots, etc. that are anti-knife, so us knife knut types know immediately not to waste our time with them, or at least be forewarned to leave our favorite cutting implements in the car or at home, or do ya' think that would just get too broad?

Alot of the places mentioned in that thread are ones I'd thought about going to before, but would have been SEVERELY disappointed if I were to get there all the way from Alaska only to change plans. So...do tell, am I onto something, or am I entertaining a fantasy?

For what it's worth I have never seen a tourist destination in Alaska that doesn't allow the carry of just about anything short of a full sized bowie. Alaska's kinda cool that way. Well, we do have the International Airport, but that's a given..one of these days when my job wouldn't be threatened I'll tell ya' all about the crap that goes on there...

anyhoo, all perceptions are appreciated, an' I hope y'all have a good weekend!:D

I think your idea would be a good one as long as the thread is perma-sticky and stays on top at this part of the forum. Then anyone who hops in would know pretty quickly when they have to leave their beloved ones in the car....
****ing paranoids:mad:

there are whole states that would qualify, the ****ing paranoids are everywhere, when will we get back to the idea that carrying a tool isn't a crime, using a tool to commit a crime is...yup that's already a crime!?!?

Sad facts are there may not be enough space to list all the places.

Most people don't carry knives and don't care.

well fwiw i for one think this is a great idea, perhaps it would make sense to try to put the list all together, maybe divided by category?

Excellent idea, RunsWithScissors. Wish a list like this would have been around earlier.;)

This list would be very informative and helpful if it was placed at the top of each one of the forums, as calyth suggested.

Oh and Don't forget the airlines! and Amtrak

YOU CAN'T CARRY FOLDERS ON A TRAIN?????????
You gotta be kidding me... Let's say I'm in NYC and wanna go to Boston... can't have a damn knife with me?

I amtrak trained to NY 2 monthes ago and couldn't even get my Cris Reeve Umfaan onboard. I had to go back and give to to my wife to take home. They damn near went postal when they saw my large Sebbie.

that sucks indeed...

Any of you got to think that in the near future martial arts are going to be banned? I wonder about the future sometimes and I really don't like what I picture...

Read the book Brave New World by A. Huxley, and it'll really make ya think!
..."BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING"!!

I thought 1984 by Orwell would be more appropriate for the phrase "Big Brother is watching".

A list is a great idea!

In my neck o' the woods these are the places that frown on knives:
Six Flags
Gatti Town
Airports (duh!)
Moody Gardens

Just about everywhere else I can pull off carrying a pretty good sized fixed blade without getting any weird looks.

Good Evening Everyone-

Generally "knife-unfriendly" places to visit:
  • The Louvre, Paris
  • Hoover Dam, Nevada
  • Albion/Batcave/Club Downtime, 30th Street, NYC
  • Empire State Building, NYC
  • Alcatraz Penitentiary, San Francisco

Hmmmm...if I think of any additional places, I'll edit my list.

That note about Amtrack is real scary. How did they find that knife on you in the first place?

IMO - This thread should be reversed to list only knife-friendly places - list will be much shorter. Then screw all the rest.

i hate it when i walk all the way to the entrance just find out that no knives a allowed and i gotta walk all the way back to my car to put it away

Good Afternoon Everyone-

What really "gets my goat" are the ubiquitous little signs saying:

"Weapons and other dangerous objects will be confiscated."
How does one conduct their day if their 3" SAK is banned at the museum, but it is allowed at the theater that evening? Or to make it more complex, an AFCK is verboten, but a Mini-AFCK is permitted? And if they're not LEO, how can they confiscate legally-owned private property?

What if you and your family are on a "walking tour" of a city like Boston, New York, San Francisco, or Washington, D.C. where it's actually easier to be AWAY from your car and on foot? You can't always run back to the car and metal detectors are popping-up like cockroaches.

It was mentioned in another thread, but worth mentioning here. What can't be eliminated by confiscatory legislation, sheeple will seek to have eliminated via "corporate policy."

[/shaking my head ruefully...]

That's where my signature comes from :)

Glockman: I've also red that book... scary too

A couple of years ago, on my first trip to the US, I went to NYC, and once I got into the island where the Statue of Liberty is placed, I noticed the "no guns/knives allowed", so I contacted one of teh guards and ask him about my Spyderco Walker... he frowned and send me straight to a couple of police officers to ask them. One of the asked -in a friendly way- me if I was going to kill someone, so I said "mmhh.. no" so he replied with a wink "just keep it in your pocket".
The metal detector didnt sound on it, btw :O

Then other day a friend and I went to the WTC and I had to leave a Native (she had to left tmy Walker) at the metal detector and pick it up later on the way out...
Actually that was funny, cos as we were leaving, the guide saw my friend and I heading for the oposite direction so he told us to come back that way, so I softly said "we're going to pick up our knives"... He replied "Photo pic ups are right here"... so I had to say again "Pick up out KNIVES"... and all the crowd that was leaving looked at us with strange faces...:D
