Headed out to Jungle Habitat with JV3 and riz_aaroni yesterday. The weather warmed up a bit, and we got to play in the snow (and bamboo!) for a few hours. Aaron chopped some wood, Jay made some snow shoes for the ESEE contest, and I took pictures and ate food :D.

No pics of the hike in, mainly because I wasn't thinking and forgot my camera in my pack. D'oh! Here's a few from after we hiked into the park a ways and it leveled out a bit more. The trail we took in was pretty icy.

Then we hit the little grove of bamboo and took a moment to shuck packs and snow shoes and move around a little more naturally.

Well, it was a short break, because Jay and Aaron started choppin' bamboo! Jay was collecting bamboo for the snow shoe project..

..and Aaron.. well, I think Aaron was trying to figure out how to fit the 14'-ish pole into his CRV. :D

We got there, dropped everything and started our projects:

Aaron was chopping, sawing, and splitting fire wood with a reaaallly nice GB Scandanavian Forest Axe (now added to my list of things to buy haha) and a folding saw..

As for me, like I said, I just took pictures, ate food, and oh yea! Played with fire!

(a few more comin'..)

Well, that fire wasn't all that great. Every time we'd add a little bit of fuel, it would start to sputter out. We figured it out: we needed craptons more of our smaller fuel, so we got back to splitting and feather-stickin' and finally got it there so we could make some lunch.

After a bit of lunch, we walked around a bit, explored the area surrounding our little "base camp," and Aaron played lumber jack on some standing deadwood. We found some holes that look like they were made by squirrels or something, burrowed into these little tunnels below the snow, with shells from acorns and other tree nuts around the openings.

After a little exploring, we decided to pack it in and head back to the cars. I'll finish with a few random gear shots :D

All in all, it was a good day in the woods, with some good people. Now I know I want/need an axe, and I'm already stoked for the next outing!

i am loving that Fletcher "Bush Operator".. i have had my eye's on one of those for quite some time now.. they look like a perfect woods knife..:)

Looks like a great day with some good friends. Any pictures of the completed bamboo showshoes?

The Bush Operator kicks ass! Very comfortable handle, and what I find to be the perfect size blade for me. Solid and plenty hefty to baton through wood, but nimble and sharp enough to whittle with the best of 'em. Definitely give Dylan a shout and pick one up!

John, I have a bunch more, but I wanted to let Jay go through them first, as he may want to use them as part of his ESEE contest entry. He has a few pics on that thread already: here. If he doesn't end up posting them himself, I'll put some up, I just wanted to give him respect so he could post his project. Hell, I just documented haha.

mike - thanks for the pics! do i always have that crazy look in my eyes whenever i'm holding a knife? :D i'll sort through the rest of your pics later and post them here. awesome time, can't wait for the next outing!

i'm pasting here my entry for the esee snow shoes contest since discussion is not allowed in that thread. i basically tried to keep the amount of materials to what i can comfortably carry for a long distance and build the shoes in a reasonable amount of time (i gave myself a goal of 2 hrs) instead of 2 weeks to build it in keeping with esee's escape & evasion theme (one of the prizes is an e&e wallet/kit).

-------------------------------------------
i went hiking with riz_aaroni and gonadz earlier today but i knew riz didn't have snow shoes and the area we were going have a patch of bamboos so i thought this was the perfect timing! here i am harvesting some fallen, bent, or almost dead bamboos. from my childhood growing up in the philippines, i knew bamboos whether dead or still green, pretty much retained it's flexibility.

esee_snow_shoes_contest_01.jpg

we setup camp and i started splitting the bamboo. they were only mostly 1" in diameter but even then i knew i could split them up and still retained much of their strength. this enabled me to get a much wider surface area to distribute my weight (currently 5'9", 177 lbs) while keeping the shoes as light as possible. after splitting most of them i started jumping up and down on the pile and barely made any marking on the snow below, so that's when i knew i had just the right amount of bamboo.

esee_snow_shoes_contest_02.jpg

here's one shoe done. after a quick test i knew it was enough to hold my weight front to back but there was a small side to side flexing which kinda caused me to have the tendency to tip over on the side if i leaned on one shoe over another a tad too much.

esee_snow_shoes_contest_03.jpg

...so i started shaving the rest of the bamboos until i can bend them pretty much in a semi-circle without snapping and started weaving them in and out around the main frame.

esee_snow_shoes_contest_04.jpg

after weaving as much bamboos as i can i tested it again...much more stable now. as an added bonus, all that weaving really puts a lot of pressure on the paracord knots so there's no way they're coming loose now! so i skipped adding more paracord to it since it wasn't needed.

esee_snow_shoes_contest_05.jpg

next step was i secured my boots to the shoes via paracord looped through my boots' shoe laces. the pic doesn't show it but i also tied the tail end of the snow shoes to my boots although a little loosely than the front. this created a hinge effect similar to professional-made snow shoes. from my brief experience with snow shoes, the tail end usually gets dragged anyway so long as the nose of the shoes are raised enough with each step it's good.

esee_snow_shoes_contest_06.jpg

after walking about 50 or so ft (gonadz was taking a pic of me while walking so if i have enough pics under the limit i might include it here later to show the snow behind me was barely disturbed) i stopped since when i looked behind me i could barely see any markings on the snow at all. i knew the shoes were doing their job because of it and the ease i was walking. in this pic there are several things going on:

1. as soon as i stepped off the snow shoe my foot sank about 6" in the snow. had i been walking without my make-shift snow shoes on, no doubt i would've sank even deeper.
2. the circled area shows the only marking of the snow shoe on the snow. i'm actually surprised at how little mark i left behind.
3. while doing this contest, i learned that if i ever find myself in an e&e scenario and have enough time, i'd ditch the commercial snow shoes (they leave tell-tale oval shape and very deep claw marks on the snow) and opt to make my own bamboo shoes instead. those horizontal marks made on the snow were a lot lighter than the fallen twigs/branches that fall on the snow (marked by the 3 arrows). a slight dusting of snow or depending on the amount of light available would've clearly covered my tracks from the ones tracking me (i hope). with minimized tracks left on the snow and coupled with jeff's advice on making j-turns, i have a much better chance of evading capture.

another pic showing how deep my foot print is with and without the snow shoes on.

thanks for the contest and the opportunity for esee gear!

Great pics guys! Nice job on those snow shoes J.

Damn, Jersey has bamboo? I just found out last year that you guys have trees, and now this!

Must be global warming or something...

;)

Sweet. Was a lot of fun. If you haven't been there and are in the area, definitely work a visit. I'm imagining the parking lot without snow and it kind of reminds me of a zombie movie or something.

I get this feeling in a lot of places, a dawn of the dead sorta thing.. kinda expect stevie to come out from some where.. ;)

I miss bamboo, used to be plentiful but not out in these woods.....

Looks like a lot of fun. A lot of COLD fun. Great snowshoes. I would never have thought of bamboo and heavy snow together. Thanks for sharing.

thanks, guys. glad you enjoyed the pics.

thanks, tony. now, try not to enter the contest so some of us have a better shot at winning esee gear too :D

yeah, it's a pretty creepy place during the summer when all the leaves are out. all these mini roads that snake through it, blind corners, and rusted out animal cages deeper inside the park. it reminds me of chernobyl.

thanks. i wish it was native here and we have the kind that grows to 6" or more in diameter! ready-made water container, baskets, shelter, the works...it's so easy to make with that stuff.

i think next time i'm bringing booze to make things a bit more interesting :p

I'm glad everyone is enjoying the pics. It really was a good time with good people. Stoked for next time, for sure.

Whenever we go in the summer when it's all green again, I'm looking forward to exploring more of the park. Looks promising.

Jay, those snow shoes turned out really great. We'll have to come up with more bamboo projects to try out. Maybe an overnighter one day in the future using a strictly-bamboo shelter (and shittons of booze and fire).

Hey, I only cut myself once with the axe!

Sounds good to me! That park has a ton of potential for fun trips.

Good stuff guys, Sorry I couldn;t make it.. Soon though

No problemo, we'll work something out.

Nice pics guys! Is that a redwing 3100 or 2650 you're sporting in there?

It is the 2650. The larger one would probably be better, though in either case, some straps to tighten the bottom would be nice. Kelty seems to have added them to a newer women's version. Love the pack though.
