Greetings folks, I know this subject comes up each year, but I figured to start a fresh one and see what the current offerings from knife makers/manufacturers are giving us lately. What got me thinking about this was a recent trade off the forums from @Monofletch, thanks again for that. and this Delica with K390 blade arrived exceptionally sharp and I've handled a lot of sharp knives...!

Stunningly sharp, as you might expect from Spyderco as @Sal Glesser and his crew are all about sharp things!

So what have you guys or gals seen lately that surprised you with either dullness or sharpness?

Agreed M Modernflame knives will need to be maintained once they have been put to use so sharpening will always be needed. The point of hearing about the edge when it arrives speaks well of the quality and thought put into it from the start and can be an indicator of how the rest of their process was handled

Was truly surprised by the out of the box sharpness of my new cold steel srk (taiwan 3v).

Outside of a few mora's it was the sharpest factory knife I have ever received.
I purchased a cheap $31 SRK in sk5, and while the grind was too far for my liking it did come screaming sharp and centered.

Honestly quite impressive considering I have some much higher end blades (cough Benchmade) that came with awful off center grinds that were too obtuse to ever get sharp.

Best luck I've had tbh is with Finnish puukos. Lots of good budget brands like Erapuu that have beautiful hand ground edges.

"custom' knives that I've owned that arrived with pretty good edges are Bradford knives and TJ Schwarz I have two of his Overland knives, the standard one and his sport model, both arrived with quite sharp and very very even edge bevels, he has a youtube video that shows a bit of how he puts his edges on.

this one is the smaller Sport model

Here's a comparison of his two Overland models, I've since replaced the jade scales with black micarta like I did with the Sport

Larger blade is about 4 7/8"
Sport blade is about 2 3/4" long

Maybe. Or it could just mean that the guy at the sharpener churns out a bad one once in a while.

There was recently a kerfuffle on YouTube regarding Medford knives and a reviewer who got a couple of dull ones.

Truth is, I've had good and bad edges from basically every manufacturer.
