G'day,
My small regular came pretty sharp--but not as sharp as I wanted, and I was able to improve on it easily.
That's been the case for all my knives!

Microtech and SOG are the only brands that have consistently been sharp enough out of the box that I didn't feel like I wanted to sharpen them right away. Everything else I have had to work on to be happy with - even most customs.
I never really cared what edge is on a new knife. I always sharpen my knives the way I use them. When I am cutting a lot of boxes for example I do not want a razor edge because that edge will require honing more than a medium edge. The only tools that I give a perfect razor edge to are my Pfeil carving tools. Not one of them has any type of burr and all can pop hairs off. But they require stropping every 20 minutes while using. I prefer a thicker microscopic edge for every day use. I normally sharpend for daily use on a medium ceramic and strop off the wire burr on leather.
Eye opening thread... Four hundred bucks for a folder that "might" cut a tomato without squishing tomato guts all over the countertop. Seventeen bucks for a Spyderco ladybug that will cut the upholstry out of a Peterbilt Semi-truck.
My small Classic came very sharp out of the box. My large Classic would not shave hair. On top of that the grind was not very even on one side. A pass on the Sharpmaker made it sharp fast but I was a litte put off by the edge quality. I also had a small flake of matal on the blade where the lock contacts that was causing sticking problems. I was able to scrape the metal off with my fingernail and now lock-up is perfect.
