I would guess I am older than most of you and the "self defense/tactical" aspect of knives is no longer that important to me; don't wish to denigrate those to which it is important; I just like knives and use them edc right now is a BM Dejavoo. In any event, I often see a dealer's website in the various forums, click on it and the first thing that pops up is an extreme "tactical" weapon of some sort, oft times I can identify it as a knife or, and this really bothers me, a set of brass, titanium, aluminum or whatever knuckles. To each his own but are those things the driving forces for the knife people today? If so, guess I am out of touch.

yep me too:D
not everybody likes that style of knife it has its place, i just prefer something a little more traditional, i carry a Yeller Case everyday:) and my Buck alpha dorado. Been carrying the same thing more or less for the past couple of years.
at the end of the day we are all knife enthusiasts, love of the sharp and pointy so we have that in common:)
all the best

Different knives are created and geared towards their target market. You like non tactical style knives, and there is a market for that.

There are still plenty of knife people out there that love the same style of knives that you do.

Well, just look at some of the threads on this forum discussing knife tests. These threads are usually about how much abuse a knife can take. I feel the measure of a knife is how well it cuts. Haven't seen any disusions on that.

I never (or at least very seldom) think of my knives as anything other than tools.

I too prefer more a conservative look to my blades, but to each their own, and I certainly have no quarrel with those who like the tactical look.

But I hear what the OP is saying, not to often a hunting knife figures prominently in a lot of advertising these days. This certainly suggests that tacticool is the current hot seller.

I think the websites advertise these knives because they are usually their newest line, and they are counting on big sales to turn an even bigger profit. Companies that aren't very well known don't have the trust and history in their name, so they rely on the "latest and greatest" designs and "breaking technology" they put into new knives to get them off the shelves and into pockets. More than likely the pockets of your average teenager who has money burning a hole in their pocket. It's a pretty popular target market, I know I bought a LOT of stuff when I was in high school that I never really needed or even used.

I don't mind the tactical/self defense type of knives, but I like them to be discreetly designed with no flashy materials or crazy looks. I'll take a brushed steel over a "tactical" black coating, and I'll take Micarta or G10 handles over something like a rare exotic wood or mother of pearl, etc. A lot of tactical blades are just too crazy looking for me, I think it draws attention to the knife and that's exactly what I don't want to do.
