Out of this world Robb Hudson on Hoffman's

I had an ongoing conversation with Robb a few years back, as I had commissioned him for some work (unfortunately, he entered his hiatus just at the time). One outcome is that he had sent pics (that have since disappeared in the net) of 2 interesting pieces he had been commissioned for. One was one of his classic bowie, but entirely in wood - blade and all. Interesting, but only so much for me.

The other one was a large fighter / bowie with a very big blade. The blade was actually hollow, and a smaller knife fit in the handle, with its blade nested within the larger blade. It was a mind boggling piece of bladesmithing work. It had all been hot forged. Trully amazing.

Dan Farr once did a bladesmithing class with Robb...

Pretty sure I have seen a photo of that knife.

The knife that was originally posted in this thread is one that I really like, but I wouldn't even contemplate spending that much money for it.

Peter - I think some dealers can basically name their price (within limits) because they have stuff which is just unavailable anywhere else. I suspect this piece will sell.

Good point Joss, and most likely correct.

It certainly would be foreign to me to have unlimited disposable cash. Then again if that were the case, the pleasure of attaining those items may not be the same either?

I don't think I will need to worry about it though :D

I save everything.....

But this 'knife' really shows his ability forging by hand.:thumbup:

Puts the initial bowie in a better context, eh?

Since we're at it...

A signature item of Robb's. Mine, and it doesn't go CLACK! ;)

Good work Coop, thanks for posting.

Ah, another thing I remember. A few years ago, there was a fileting knife (or a set of 2? Can't recall) of his for sale on ebay. The handle(s) were ivory, and the fittings were all gold. Robb told me it was a customer of his who had wanted that simply for bragging rights.

I love the blade too but don't care for the S guard on this piece and feel the handle is a tad short for the blade length. For some reason WH seems to have made a lot of high prices on a lot of knives but of course as seller that is his option. Buyers have to decide if the opportunity and the price is equal and worth the purchase/investment.

I just want to say, from one Rob(b) to another, that I am sorry if I misspelled your name when I made this photo!

I try to do my due diligence and look these things up, but I have seen yours spelled both ways.

You going up to Pasadena(Knife Expo) this weekend, N00b?:D:confused::D

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

thanks for the warm welcome guys, Hiro Soga will be covering Pasadena. I wish I could say I was - its practically in my backyard.

another big consideration is who made the knife, and are they retired or passed on. I have seen simple loveless subhilts go for 20k if I remember correctly (I think that was the maker).
