Told her to watch out for trip enders ! ^^^ That tree weighed tons. About 3' in dia & 20' long, leaning against another tree. There was a log right under it. Daughter said "that looks like a good spot." I had to edumacate her on widow makers & trip enders.

Came across 2 different snakes of the same kind. Anyone know what it is ? They do have some kind of rattle snake there. Hmmmm

A wood peckers hole maybe ? Or the start of one.

More wood peckers holes. They have the giant Pileated Woodpeckers there. Damn near 2-3' tall.

And finally, our cheap-assed W-World packs we picked up. $20 each, no waist strap but loops for your own if you want. Has a decent amount of Molle loops. Able to mount a Tweener on the opposite side of water bottle pocket. Inside has a ton of pockets & nets w/zips, key clip etc. A lot of value for a light, small, day pack or one to keep in the car/truck. Hope you enjoyed the pics. Mannn am i out of shape. I am whipped. :D

Awesome pics, looks like a great way to spend an afternoon! I really like that sheath mod, and for 20 bucks, those packs look nice.

Awesome fun! and thats a garter snake i believe. i had a few as a kid before i got into pythons. i use to take my garters swimming in a pool, fun times! eventually one of my pythons bit me taking a hunk out of a finger as i was tossing him a mouse, thats the last snake i ever had :)

I'll second the garter snake identification. I'll also second that for 20 bucks those bags do look pretty nice.

Looks like a good time. I'll third the garter snake. The packs looks nice. They are very very close to the 511 rush 12.

nice! that's a garter snake (not venomous, eats mostly fish, frogs, etc. so it stays close to a water source). i frequently hike in ny too and we do have venomous snakes native here (ny & nj) - copperhead and timber rattlers.

garter snake i saw last week in the appalachian trail (harriman state park in ny):

here's a timber rattlesnake i saw about 3 weeks ago for reference, also in ny...extremely venomous but they make up for it with a mellow personality...or so i'm told...i don't want to test that theory.

Looks like a fun and productive day. Time in the woods especially with kids is always rewarding for everyone involved. Out of curiosity, what did you think of the wally world packs? A knifemaker buddy of mine recently picked one up, the bigger model.

Well, i'll tell you what---you simply can not go wrong if you want a pack with Molle strips for gear on a budget. I will probably go back & get the larger one too. Not because i really need it ( i think i gots me more packs than my wife has purses---OMG is a pack a man purse ??? Man i hope not ! )LOL

Would they fail, rip, tear or loose some stitching in a EOTWAWKI or a SHTF scenario---probably. But you can beat the price and the features for that price. I like it a lot.

I checked out the one he bought today. It looks like the took the RUSH72 and improved the design. Whether it's more rugged or not, I cannot say, but it's a good design.

Looks like a great and amazing day man! I've got a small 2 compartment pack from there, that I use as a first-aid kit. Its held up crazy good.

Hi, thanks for sharing.
Am I the only one here who lives in a city? :( Seems that you all leave are very beautyful places with lot of nature and lot of things to see.

Wow!!! Beautiful animal!!!!!!!!!:D

Nice post, it looks like you had a great time.

To shed a little light on the snake identifacation my girlfriend who is on her way to being a herpatologist says that the snake picture in the origional post looks like an Eastern Ribbon snake. This snake is usually mistaken for a Garter snake but is it's own species. While the color varies slightly with the individuals the Ribbon snake usually has bolder stripes and the body is on average thinner than the Garter, they also have a longer tail. (from the vent to tip of tail)

I don't know about New York but the Eastern Ribbon snakes is of special concern in Maine.

While it is hard to make a 100% acurate identifacation without having this individual in hand, going by that picture that snake is not a Garter.

Not trying to stir the pot but you did ask for help with the ID,

Jeremy

The eastern ribbons im use to have more color between the stripes, but both are closely related species. i cant say your wrong from the picture but ill keep my original ID as a garter snake. lets stir it on up- j/k

If we could see the bottom of the mouth or tail it would be easier to id and eastern ribbons lateral stripes are found on scale rows 3 and 4 (in garter snakes they are on rows 2 and 3). , Hey op go find that snake again LOL
