Outdoor Belt

For keeping up my trousers, I wear a simple web belt with a brass buckle
For load carrying belts that go over jeans or my jacket when I carry knives and axes, and pouches, I use a work belt from Nicolas with work suspenders
I wear these lower than trouser belts on my hips and do not interfer if I am wearing a pack belt

Nicolas Work gear makes work belts, tool pouches, and tool aprons.
Because it is work wear, the prices are very reasonable for high quality tough leather

Light thin thing that came off a pair of Mountain Hardware trousers. It's like a soft tape ribbon version of a NATO watch strap. It's just big enough not to dig in like a bit of string would. I don't like belts, or worse belt buckles, you can feel when crouched or scrambling over stuff. And they get even worse if you add in the waistbands of thermals and a pair of waterproof trousers. When I want to carry stuff round my midsection it goes in a bum bag / fanny pack thing that I have wedded to a dual SLR sling harness.

Patagonia web belt. Had it for a while (couple years?) and it's been good.

Mine is dark brown.

I haven't worn a belt at all in the outdoors for many years. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, I used a military style canteen belt with a canteen and a leather cartridge box for my Ten Essentials (aka survival) items. Later I switched to a thick leather pistol belt made by the old Lawrence holster company.

If you had asked me at the time, I would have said that carrying all of my hiking stuff on my belt kept the weight off my shoulders so it was more comfortable than a day pack. Over time, I realized that I didn't have enough room for anything extra like granola bars or more than a quart of water, so I added more pouches and another water bottle until the weight was too much to carry on a belt. Then I switched to a day pack. I would not go back.

The day pack has a hip belt like my full size backpack, so I don't want any other belts around my hips. My favorite hiking pants nowadays are some super light nylon warmup pants that I got at a big box sporting goods store. They don't need a belt to hold them up, and the elastic waistband is very flat and comfortable under a pack's hip belt.

Main reason to carry a day pack instead of carrying everything on a belt? Extra clothing! Rain gear, extra insulation, etc. Weather can change fast here in Wyoming, especially at high altitude if you don't make it back to your vehicle before dark. You won't catch me in the outdoors nowadays with less than a day pack with my Ten Essentials items, so I never need something like an Altoids kit. If I get stuck in my vehicle, I have a -20 F rated sleeping bag and bivy etc. so I can walk out if I have to.

I agree

I also went thru the same process
But I wanted to carry a kinife and an axe on a work belt, like when I used to work as a carpenter
So I use a work belt with a tube hammer holder for my hand axe, and my knife, and penknife in a pouch

Do you carry a knife on your belt?

I have a double thickness belt made by rayban a forum member.Tough as old boots great value belt, and a gentleman to deal with.

I use just my basic leather belt that I wear every day. When I want to carry stuff that is a bit heavier, etc.. I have a vietnam era nylon web pistol belt that I will strap on and use. usually has a holster (ruger new model blackhawk in 45 lc), a machete (vietnam era replica...pretty heavy), and a BK17 (most of the time). My regular belt has my phone and leatherman on it still. I have walked around with the pistol and machete (and worked with the machete with it on) for a few hours and never really felt the weight.

I am actually looking for a new one in a large rather than medium
