What steel is the carbon? Does it hold an edge? Not that personality or more “permanent companion” matter when you need a knife, but I was hoping for personality as well as performance and good edge holding.

Hard to beat a Mora for value and overall use unless you intend to beat the snot out of it without taking any care.

Their carbon steel, as I recall, is a Swedish analog of 1095. I have several of them in and around the house and shop. Quick and easy to sharpen, and get the job done.

Mora uses something very close to 1095 -- good stuff.

If you want something more Special..... A fellow maker here has a subforum.... Called JK Handmade Knives. Check him out.

You will get to choose some customization as well.
I recommend looking at his Canadian Belt Knife.
It's one of the nicest I've seen.

....and not just some mass marketed knife that Everyone has!

Here is a Esee 4 (1095) and a Helle Eagan (laminated steel wicked sharp) Both are around a 4" blade. Can be had for around the 100 dollar mark each. I have a Mora Heavy duty no pics. Good knife and its only about 18 bucks.

Jk for a great knife, he has figured out how to get the best out of his 01 steel. Many nice models to choose from. Kephart or the Rule 9. I have a older Kephart, and spear pointed hunter, not sure of the model.
