Not sure how to ask this, but I am putting together a woods bag. Not neccessarily a survival kit even though it will have survival stuff in it. I guess its what id like to call a catch 22 bag. Here are some of the items I have in it so far, and I am just beggining to put it together.

Maxpedition Sabercat
fishing kit
multiple BICS
Fire steel
Ruger 22/45 and 3 clips
Army IFAK complete

I know I have lots to add to it and plan to do so in time. My question is in the 1st aid department is an IFAK an overkill? I will be keeping this bag in my vehicle at all times and also will tak it in the woods when I hunt, fish, hike or do pretty much anything outdoors.

No, I know I can never have enough first aid items.

Things I would add?

Binoculars
survival kit( firestarter, lighter, space blanket, whistle, mirror things of that nature)
Flash light and extra batteries
compass or GPS for sure
extra socks!:D

Thats just a few, there will be more items from more people. What is your current knife? Also, what do you have for water purification and shelter needs?

What I like to do is cover the basic's

Shelter
Fire
Water
Signal/navagation
First Aid

AMK Heat Sheet (I rubber band chemical hand warmers to mine)
paracord
water treatment tablets
Clif Bars
Guyot stainless bottle or Nalgene with nested cup
flashlight

my knife is a BUSSE NMSFNO, and I also have several other smaller knife options. The BUSSE fits well on the bottom of the rig in a kydex sheath. I plan on adding numerous other items and will post pics when I can

In that case you'll want something small to go with it, multitool? a SAK maybe.

either way, you will want the essentials. and for sure get some pics up. I know its not like I've got any thing better to do than crituiqe pictures.:D:thumbup:

You asked about the IFAK being overkill and no one answered so I'll give my opinion.

I have never seen a FAK that packs as small and covers as many possible situations as the military issue FAK. As far as overkill goes, in my opinion you can never be too prepared for a medical emergency. I don't know what the IFAK weighs ( because I got out of the service before they came out) but if it's about the same as the older version I don't see it being an issue. Also, for the price, where else are you going to get a FAK with as high quality and variety of uses as the IFAK?

The IFAK is a good piece of gear, I carry one myself.

Also consider getting a GI poncho and maybe a liner. You have rain gear and a makeshift sleeping bag. A versatile piece of gear.

You might consider GI canteens rather than the Guyot/Nalgene bottles. I read somewhere that they will fit in the side pockets of the Sabercat, I don't know if the canteen cups will also fit or not.

good idea, never thought of that. I have already placed my order for the guyot and cup as well as the maxpedition pouch to add to my saber cat. My thought is i will try to make this rig modular, that way i can downgrade if need be. the initial rig will be all inclusive. if that makes any sense

I would recommend adding to your fire kit. Throw in a pack of Petroleum Jelly Cotton-Ball fire-starters (PJCBs), and perhaps some fatwood or other tinder. Also, you might want to swap out one of your Bics for a butane lighter, as they can be more effective in rain or wind conditions. Add some matches in a waterproof case, and you're set. It's hard to have too much redundancy when it comes to fire starting, especially given the compact nature of the tools.

All the best,

- Mike

OK without further adue, pictures as promised; again this is a work in progress and maybe my intentions are to high, here are some pics of what i have so far,

I have a maxpedition nalgene water holder on the way as well as a guyot bottle and cup as well, in the IFAK i have 2 larger contractor trash bags, I am putting together a detailed list of my items so currently sling the advice.
