I am looking for a knife that could be used well outdoors for about 200 or less. I am an occasional camper/hiker and i do go target shooting a little more often. I am looking for something that can take a decent beating.

With that kind of budget there's hundreds of great choices. I have a strong preference for a convex edge, so I'd suggest looking at Fallkniven or Bark River. I have the F1 from Fallkniven and the Fox River from Bark River. Both great all around outdoor knives.

I would look at Rat Cutlery, an RC-4 would be my choice. Price is around $150 or less...edit, 5.56 beat me to the RAT Cutlery recommendation.

You could also go lower cost, a lot of folks have a healthy respect for Becker Knife & Tool knives from KaBar. I like both the BK-7 and the BK-2 "Campanion"

For $200 you could also get a nice custom from one of the makers here on BF, check out Fiddleback's subforum, Koster, and others.

Might want to just lurk in the Wilderness & Survival Skills forum for a while.

Rat Cutlery RC-4, hands down!!

It is a GREAT knife!! GREAT warenteee!!

They can be had for around $100 or slighty under.

I find the Rat RC-5 to be too heavy and big for my liking, YMMV however.

BRKT bravo 1 or 2 its everything you asked for and so much more.

I agree with this gentleman. The Rats are great- they're excellent knives. But for a little bit more money you can get a Bark River- which is every bit as tough, but has the edge in terms of comfort and aesthetic appeal, IMO.

+1, and in my experience holds an edge noticeably longer.

All good suggestions - that is the problem

However I agree pretty much with Wolf - The owner of bark River uses a fox river occasionally or a Canadian special (mostly).

I have the fallkniven F1 which I like (and S1 and WM1). if I was buying another I would probably go the BRKT Canadian special - I think that and the Fox River have very practical designs that become more appealing - especially for food prep.
