Outdoor knives

The Fallknivens are stainless steel and I like the convex blade. With some different grit sandpaper and mouspad or piece of cardboard you can get a convex edge nice and sharp. I do have the ESEE (well RAT before the name change) RC-3, 4 and 5. The 5 is just a huge beast of a knife and one of my faves, but its not as good an all around bushcraft knife as some of the smaller blades. The RC-4 would probably be the best in that lineup, but I don't like the handles, as they are a bit small. While replacement micarta scales are available for the 3 and 4, they are expensive.

I would lean towards the Fallkniven F1 or S1. You should also consider some of the Bark Rivers like the Aurora, Bravo-1, and Northstar.

Check Doug Ritter's fixed blade knives. They are fantastic general purpose knives. For your needs I'd recommend the Mk3. Great steel. Nice geometry. Tough handle with nice grip.

So far I’m leaning towards the ESEE 4, knocking out the F1 only because the knife cost + a custom sheath makes the ESEE 4 with the standard sheath look a lot more attractive. But then I think the F1 would handle better, and is that worth it.

I believe their are two sheathes available for the F1 one is a leather and one is a zytel plastic. IMO neither of them suck, but at the same time their not Kydex; which seems to be the current flavor. I'm not a kydex man myself just because I don't need or desire the retention (don't handstand much these days ;)) but your experience may vary.

The fallkniven warranty is not very good, that being said you don't need it. The ESEE warranty is "lifetime" but thats only if you trust them to honor it. Again ESEE knives are good enough that you won't need the warranty so this entire paragraph is largely irrelevant.

Either way you go you can't go wrong. Best of luck.

All of these will fit the bill. If you need help on model names just ask and I can point you in the right direction. My favourite is the Aurora (top).

For everything you listed except fighting a bear in the nude - $15 and down - Mora stainless.
For everything listed - $50 and down - one of the Condors. But it will be a pain cutting the vegetables and cleaning small game and fish with one of these big tree chopping bear fighting blades.
For everything listed plus good looks, good sheath, warranty, and etc.. Figure on spending more than $100.

BK-2 is too big. I don’t need a big knife. This is kind of a bad way to put it, but say I had an ax, what knife would I want with that to make life better. No big chopping, no splitting. How do they get is it so cheap anyway?

Weirdly, BK2 is my goto knife for finer work - it's more comfortable for tasks like making spoons, trap components, etc. than it has any right to be. But, if it doesn't float your boat, then the BK14 or BK11 are also fantastic low cost, high value knives.

How do they get the price so low - good question. Dunno but I'm glad they do. :)

For nude bear fighting (wait, are you nude or is the bear?) you might want both of these. Bears can be mean and they bite.

If you want something that costs a fair bit more and looks a bit prettier, have a look at the ESEE RC4.

um...actually ka-bar makes becker blades. there is on collaboration between becker and doug ritter which is rowen made, but other then that the blades are kabar, unless u mean the older gen blades made by blackjack or cammilus

I'm pretty sure that Rowen makes the knives for Becker, which is owned by Ka-Bar. If that's not true, than I was misinformed.

...Upon further detecting, I was misinformed. Rowen made some TOPS knives years back but they do not make Becker's. I can't remember where I heard/read that Rowen manufactures knives for all three companies. I know they make ESEE's knives and that's what matters to me most.

BK&T has collaborated with numerous people to produce knives/tools. Camillius, KaBar, ect.. Look close at the pics. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/837583-quot-RSK-MKII-trade-quot
