I have bad feet . A crushed heel on one and a heel spur on the other. Ive tried lots of different shoes. Air Nike running shoes have worked out the best. They have aggresive enough treads for light hiking and plenty of cushioning. I use New Balance inserts . They have the best arch supports that I have found. For more serious hiking I wear boots.

I don't think that all outdoor shoes or boots are bad for your feet. Grant you get what you pay for. I'm lucky enough not to have any major foot problems besides maybe a weak ankle and my heels can bruise real easy on a stony path.
Maybe a foot doctor can help you better (custom inserts)? Also try going to a place like REI to have boot or shoe fitted for your feet. They have a great selection and great customer service when it come to something like that. Beware though they are a bit pricey, but it might be worth every cent when you are on the trail with a load on your back.
Hope this helps.

Orthotics will help and I would mind-meld with the professional doing the orthotics as far as what kind of support you need and what corrections you may need for over/under pronating and so forth.

In general, you will find that each manufacturer has a different last-- the mold that the shoe is wrapped around as it is made. Some have wider or narrower heel cups, etc, etc. Spend some time in a good store like REI or a Redwing store where the people know their stuff. You'll know when you find a good shoe. You will fond a brand that works better for you and the *general* trend is that most shoes of that brand will too. Your mileage may vary.

I read an article a while back about a guy who runs a class on customizing your boots to fit properly. I can't remember his name, but he basically considers an out-of-the-box boot as a raw starting point. He uses better insoles, tongue and heel pads, and so on, until the boot fits right. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

My problem is too much weight and I can fix that-- put a lock on the fridge!

Superfeet insoles have helped me a lot too.

I've always had problem feet. I got prescription orthotics. Buy the best boots you can afford. I have Danners and Justins. Much better now since i've done this.

Phil Oren is the shoe fit guy, custom boots are pricey but do fit like a glove. Only a handful of really good custom backpacking bootmakers left these days.
