I have a project in mind...I've always like the Grohmann Boat Knife, but not the hump at the base of the handle. I'm going to get one of their kits and grind away part of the hump, giving the handle a more "rounded" appearance. I may even use a different handle material (I still have some sambar stag scales at home I haven't used yet). I also have a different pouch sheath at home as well for it. I believe it'll make a pretty good little sheath knife for camping, hiking and other outdoor activities! I'll post pics of it when I get it done.

Grohmann makes a great knife. I surprised more people don't have one or talk about it. I bought my son the larger survival knife and bought 3 medium, Canadian Belt knives. I gave two away, and kept one. I love the grip, looks odd but I think it is more comfortable than the boat knife. The one friend loved his. He took a solo kayak trip to the Yukon with that knife, a SAK and my Woodsman Pal. He had some great stories and pics.

Oh yea, one of my survival instructors had one and used it for EVERYTHING.:)

Great knives. I have the Belt Knife and the Folding Belt Knife. I would like to pick up the KOA Yukon Belt knife as well. Its just their version of the same knife but probably in D2.

I remember seeing the Boat Knife with my Canadian Armed Forces Air Defense friends back in the 70's and early 80's. They were issued them as survival knives. I always liked them! I don't know why it has taken me so long to get one myself!

The Grohmann Deer & Moose Knife http://www.grohmannknives.com/pages/r108s.html looks like the knife for me...I wonder if a 5 &1/2 " blade is just a little big for gutting a whitetail (which is why I always take a buck 110 folding hunter). Looks like a great survival/utility blade though. Anyone know what kind of steel?---thier website says high-carbon stainless...

I don't think you could go wrong with a grohmann, certainly under-appreciated here on the forums though...yes, we all know the RAT-7 is a great afordable blade!

Hell, a $12 (today's pricing) green river knife was enough for the mountainmen of the old west!

My kit is on order, and should arrive in about 10 days or so. When I get the project completed, I'll post some pics of how it turns out. I know there's no such thing as the "perfect field knife" but I believe this one will come close! Paired up with my ever-present, and highly useful SAK, it ought to give me great service.

If it is for running you should also consider stainless. When it comes to sweat and water I use a Kershaw Amphibian, nothing special but lightweight and stainless.

Bodhi, the kit blade is a flat-ground stainless one. I should mention that the "woods-running" part is figurative, not literal. It's a "backwoodsman" term I picked up as a kid. My operated-on 54 year old knees don't let me run much anymore...unless whatever's chasin' me has large teeth and claws!
