Outdoors Folder - Your Ideas Please

Same pain felt here. A CS Voyager Large Tanto is retailed 110US$ and that is considered a normal shop. A Buck 110 with ionfusion blade and normal handle is retailed 200US$. Another shop that i consider a rip off one that sells any 50-100 US$ folder for 300-400 US$ stating that it's collectible :barf: ). A BM 720 is sold US$499

I think Dozier Ka-Bar folding hunter at AG Russell that listed <20$ would somewhere 65$ in OZ ..?

You guys are really getting shafted. Maybe somebody that lives in California could take the order and ship it out to you to hopefully get it to you for a lot better cost.

... what would make a good Outdoors Folder for Camping, Bushwalking, etc. It would be used to cut rope, slice meat and vegies, gut & clean fish, make wood shavings etc

A large Opinel is optimal for those cutting chores. The only problem is contamination of the piviot area with fish offal. Spyderco has lots of options if you want better ease of one handed opening and a harder stainless steel, more secure grip, etc. .

I don't know what they are like now, but I have an old (hardly ever used) Cold Steel Trail Guide folder (clip point). It has Carbon V steel, takes and holds a wicked edge. The new ones are like $30.00 US. I think I paid around $40.00 for mine. E-mail me if you are interested- I'll let you have it cheap:)

I'm in the UK and I buy all of my knives from the US. Even if I get stung for import tax its still cheaper.

If the calypso jr (~$40) is too short, you could go for the military/paramilitary (circa $100 if you buy from the US). I've never used an endura but I'm sure it'll do a good job, its just that I prefer flat grinds.

Does it have to be a folder if you in the great outdoors? With that sort of budget you'll get more for your money with a fixed blade, the Temperance or Perrin are both great choices. Or the Fallkniven F1.

Not sure if you need a lock, but if you want something really PC, how about the AG Russell Scout Knife

Alternatively, how about a Lagioule? I have one with a thin flat ground 4" blade of 12c7, I think it cost me about eur50 in France. Had to put a decent edge on it myself, but its very nice.

I have to agree that either the BM Griptillian or a Buck 110 coupled with a SAK is ideal...especially a 110 out of the Buck Custom shop.
AG russell also makes a nice lockback w/ats-34. i have one with camoflauge micarta which looks great and cuts even better.

Here in the bush it is quite acceptable to where a folder on your belt even into the pub, bank etc - the advantage of a folder is that you can wear it all the time and not worry about taking it off when you reach a town or stop somewhere for a beer or feed. I find less and less fixed blades are now sold - when I was a kid in the Boy Scouts we were were allowed to wear fixed blades even to school if you had the uniform on - how things have changed.

IMO

The SAK's are out due to mediocre blades. Just softer than they should be to be considered as a primary tool. (Standing by for onslaught from SAK lover's!) Very PC however.

The Endura is a great knife and would work, but it's very "pointy" and black - bad PC score.

The Buck 110 and Gerber Gaitors are good knives but with a sharply clip/"Bowie" shape - poor PC score.

The Mini-Griptillian (2.91") looks like a good bet, especially in yellow - a very PC look. In your budget.

Also consider the Cold Steel Trail Guide drop point in carbon steel. While it's black, it is a stout spear point (only one edge) and gets a good PC rating. Definitely in your budget.

Terrible we even have to consider such issues, but we do.

Good hunting.

I will also recommend the Benchmade 551 Griptilian or 556 Mini-Griptilian.

The Griptilians come in either black or olive drab.
The Minis come in black or olive drab but also in some very non-threatening colors too (yellow, high-visibility green, blue, and purple).
Not only are the colors "friendly", but they're easy to see when dropped or misplaced.

The Buck 110 is a great knife but IMHO it is much too heavy to lug around while hiking or camping. For the same weight or less you could carry a full-sized multi-tool.

Victorinox SAKs are also great and very handy but I would choose a multi-tool over the SAK.

Good luck,
Allen.
