I'm in the market for a general use outdoor knife. I do a lot of hiking and need something I can use for defence against animals and general outdoor/hunting uses. My price range is between $50-80 USD. ($65-110 CAD). I would prefer 4.5-7" in blade length.

Since I live in Canada the only decent site for me to order from is
www.knifezone.ca

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you have.

The Fallkniven S1 should do you fine....but i think it's slightly a bit higher than your budget...but i'm sure you'll be real happy with the knife. I think it's just the right size you are looking for...you will not regret spending that bit extra on this knife...

If you want something smaller the Swamp Rat Howling rat is quite alright...

I like the Becker Campanion. It's not too long but good and thick (1/5 inch). Despite its thickness, it cuts very well and has a drop point. I know how sticky Canadian laws are. My dad's Canadian. The Campanion looks so harmless and it even has "camp" in the name stamped on the blade. I pack mine along with my peanut butter in a baggie, harmless. It would be an excellent defense knife never the less. It's super sharp and has a strong point. The deep belly indicates a formidable slasher. I didn't like the thick handle or the sheath. I took the handle off and wrapped the tang with leather cord and then made my own sheath from leather. This made the knife much flatter and easier to carry. Becker Knife and Tool Co. made now by Camillus.

I would suggest Beckers. I saw the site you listed has the BK7 Combat Utility or the BK10 Crewman. Both are tough and should fit your needs.

I was leaning toward BK-7 and BK-10 although I'm not sure if I should get the 5.5" blade or 7" blade.

I'm not sure if the Companion has a long enough blade at just 5".

You may find the 5.5" blade length a bit on the short side when it comes to light chopping...

I would recommend the BK7 or the USMC Kabar. Both have 7" blades and are nearly the same price.

My preference is the Kabar but it needs a modification...cut off the top portion of the guard and file it untill it conforms to the radius of the stacked leather handle. Use a bit of cold blue to finish the bare metal and you'll have one heck of a good outdoors knife.

The stacked leather handle is what puts the Kabar ahead of the BK7, but this is strictly my own personal preference.

Stacked leather has a tacky or grippy quality that other handle materials just can't duplicate.

Knife selection is very personal. You might want to handle several different knives before you buy.

The kabar 1212 is a good knife.

For an outdoors utility knife the serrations make the blade more specializied for cutting things like rope, belts, etc.

A plain edge provides more versatility. A plain edge Kabar or BK7 will more that meet any outdoor cutting needs.

That shinny tan stacked leather handle on the USMC Kabar, develops a dark patina. I'd say it feels better and looks better the more you use the knife.

I'll try to post a pic of my USMC Kabar so you can see how it looks after some use.

Don't forget to check out ProEdge knives in the Niagra area. They have a site, but I don't remember what it is. Great selection, prices, and even better customer service.

I would look at the Fallkniven A1 and S1, and for more $$$ the Northern lights series has a few in your size range. They have leather stacked handles as well.

I gave up trying to post a picture of my Kabar for Valiant.

Valiant, you aren't aceppting emails so I emailed two pictures to Jim Craig.

Jim, I hope you don't mind me asking for your help.

Or, Valiant, if you want to see some cool Kabar photos you can email me.

Check out Big Country/Black Jack knives. I have a Hookr and it's great outdoors, like a good compromise between a razor and a machete.

For camping, I would stay away from Ka-bars. They're really weak and bent very easily. Either Becker or Ontario Rat series are the ones you might wanna check out.

Hmmmmm, sorry Collector. I don't mind doing it, but I can't seem figure out how.

I will try some more, though.

BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA

honestly dude, have you looked at their prices? they are in cdn funds, but a native for 100 bux? thats saying that the us dollar is 2 dollars cdn, which it isnt.....

slap yourself for ordering from them.

do 1sks, TDE, NGK, Knifeworks.... or even get something from a member on the exchange, ive seen a LOT of good deals

oh, and beckers ROCK

From smaller to larger:

Gerber Yari

Becker BK10

Buck Nighthawk

S&W HRTDR

Becker BK7

I have all but the Crewman. Any of the above would fit your criteria and suit your needs, but the BK7 would be my choice on a walkabout. Less cumbersome, which is often a priority for me on day hikes, is the Nighthawk.

2 Things you haven't thought of:

1. The Canadian dolar was 62 cents US not long ago, it's only been the last few months it has shot up to 76 cents US hence the price difference.

2. Shipping fees are over $20 USD. Plus there are trade taxes on the order plus 15% HST. If I order from Knifezone it's around $6 USD for shipping.

Plus, the Native is around $100 at all the retailers I have seen.

Have you tried Murray at www.Proedge.com yet? If anyone has good prices in Canada, it's Murray. (You'll notice I figured out his site address...:p )

There is a 4% import tax on knives purchased in the US that you would have to pay at the post office before you can pick up your parcel, plus the GST!

My experience ordering knives from the US (this is when I liived in Canada) the knife price in Canadian $ worked out to pretty close to being twice the advertised US price. This would include the exchange rate, shipping, duty and Canadian taxes.

Check your local retailers before ordering. A hunting or fishing shop may be able to special order you a knife at less than it would cost if you ordered it yourself.

Or if you plan on visiting the US in the near future, buy it here!
