Outdoors Survivin!

Thanks redwood, I was hunting and doing a bit of extra scouting as well. It was a beautiful day.

Wow..... Makes me want to move to Idaho. That's some gorgeous country up there! Definitely on my list of places to visit. I feel like there are so many beautiful parts of this country that I need to see. Been on more vacations to the carribbean then I have to my own country. I think this year I'm gonna rent and RV and Drive across it. DYING to see a giant Redwood in real life.

So, very close to my house there is the Potomac River and the C and O Canal. There is an awesome cliff with some rocky outcroppings that make for a great little spot to hike to. It takes ten minutes max, at a 45 degree incline(sometimes steeper). Once you are at the top there is a nice flat area to set ip a day camp and chill. I hiked up there today with the intent of getting the new 5.1 some action on its maiden voyage. Well there was some F'n hippies already up there when I got there. I am not a fan of hippes. (Sorry if any of you are hippies). I know why they were there. So I took a few quick pics and rolled out. Here is the gear I took with me. A camelbak Max gear Hawg, a nalgene and nesting cup, gerber saw, 2hawks longhunter, eno hammock and straps and a little fire kit. I was going to make a small fire with the 5.1, have some hot tea and have a packed lunch. Oh well... Heres the pics...

To the left of the panoramic shot is south towards DC, to the right is north towards Harpers Ferry, WV.

That looks like a nice place to get away for a day. Too bad about the hippies.

I'm guessing they were up there smoking dope, which would put you in a really awkward situation. I understand, having been in few similar situations myself, when I was younger.

Anyway, Thanks for the pics, and the effort.

Yep! Im pretty sure they were getting ready to blaze up when I popped up over the hilltop. I could care less if they were smoking, but I couldnt be hanging out in the same area, especially since its a national park and routinely patrolled by the US Park Rangers. I may just have to have a backyard campfire to test out the 5.1.

Beautiful photos Riz!
I would've told those granola eaters that Starbucks was having a buy one get one free sale. They would've vanished like a fart in the wind.

Nice to have such a place near where you live Riz. I wish I have a backyard like what you have there so I can camp out more often. I am intrigued by the sheath you have there, care to reveal some info?

Its a skystorm bushcraft sheath. I got it for my old 5.1 which was always a little loose in the sheath. The new 5.1 fits more snugly , because of the new handle contours. I think he goes by Patriot Leather now.

I look like one of the hills people from hills have eyes. When I pull out a blade and talk about skinning, hippies tend to meander on. Should've taken me Riz. Lol. Looks like quit the hike, I hope you get some daddy and me time with that new 5.1.

I got a 3.5 size cross draw sheath on order with patriot. I can't wait.

Nice pics Riz! What optics are those you have there? Nikon Monarchs? I was gonna pull the trigger on a set of Monarch 5s 8 x 50 and was wondering how good they were.

They are monarchs. I really like them. Binos are one of those things with a cost to performance threshold that once you cross it, you pay a huge increase for a disproportionately small increase in performance. I can't remember off the top of my head, but there I think they Monarch 5's. 8x42. If I recall I went with lower magnification for a slightly better lowlight performance and wider field of view. When I get home tonight I will double check what they are. I think I paid less than $300.
I checked out Vortex Vipers which are supposed to be nice (and were, but were 2X the cost), luepold, leica, Zeiss, sworovski and for the money, the Nikon's seemed to be the best performance to cost ratio. The things that seems to set the really high end stuff apart, wasn't image sharpness or brightness, but zero distortion right at the edge of the image. Oh yeah, the big three are like 5 to 15 times the cost of Nikon's. I have an even cheaper, like $120 pair of Nikon binoes that I use for work and they are just as clear as my Monarchs, just bulkier and less durable.

I once tried a Leica and fell in love with the image clarity but the price puts me off. I settled for a Nikon instead.

I've had three pairs of Nikon Monarchs, original Monarch, the Monarch X and the Monarch 5. All were/are excellent for the money. They are the Survive! of the binocular world for quality vs cost. Especially the Monarch 5.

I love this talk of binoculars. I really want to get into more wildlife viewing and photographing....... not so much the shooting :D

Allow me to display my ignorance with this question....... what do you get with better quality binoculars? What do you do with such things? I did some googling and those prices blew my mind! I really am a noob with "optics".

Waterproof vs water resistant adds cost.

Things like coated --> multi-coated --> fully multi-coated lenses, each step up adds cost.

Also, does it have any kind of armoring to protect it from drops/bangs. Another thing is the level of warrranty and the grade of glass.

When you step into fully multi-coated lenses with a waterproof housing, you're usually getting good glass.

I was wrong... They are original monarchs and 10x42. I guess i looked at 8s and didnt get them.
