outdoors Victorinox?

@znapschatz - that is true but you can get the Champ Plus for $40 and the Swiss Champ for $55 on Ebay so it depends on if you think the plier's are worth an extra $15 as well as an extra layer! :)

My thinking is that all these are in the same class; that is, big enough to need a commitment from its bearer. To anyone willing to tolerate the extra mass, the weight differences are trivial, easily finessed by a good belt sheath (I like the Vic nylon). Years ago I read in some outdoors magazine that weight-saving backpackers and the like consider no more than 7 oz. is acceptable for optional gear. The Swisschamp, largest of the three SAKs, weighs 6.7 oz. And yes, the pliers have come in handy for me many times. Of course, YMMV. As for the $15 price difference, how could that even be a concern? That won't buy two movie tickets, but it will help give you the complete version of one of the world's best things.

Hey brother, I am not arguing with you! I love the Swisschamp, it is a great mt with all the tools needed but just noting the difference as some people who do NOT the plier's or the extra layer and can also save a few bucks! That is all I am saying! I can carry the swisschamp or champion on a P-7 clip in front pocket and it is not that bad, weight wise! I don't use pouches much if at all except for my Vic MT. :0

Another neat model is the Vic Troubleshooter....

Has the metal saw/file instead of a wood saw.

Carry it in a ruck or on your belt.

I hear what you are saying. There are three factors for me that make that not work. one, in my method, the SAK is the final backup, so it stays in my pocket. Second, belt carry doesn't work with my big pack, so that option is out. Lastly, I have tiny hands, so for me the champ would be unweildly, and thats the last thing I need in a backup tool. But by all means, do what works for you.

I think for me, being outdoors mean I will have the SAK in belt pouch since it'll be more demanding during hiking and stuff, and not much in campsites. I won't mind the belt pouch bulkiness but weight will be on a watch since I'll be carrying that lol
it's either for camp use or for emergency use anyway but size will matter. I have large hands but larger the SAK more uncomfortable, right?

I cut down a 2.25" diameter tree to make a walking stick by using the saw.
I cut it to length, and trimmed all the branches off using the saw.
I did all necessary prep work prior to starting seasoning using the main blade (it is hanging to dry now for a couple of years).

This was all done using the Swisschamp, and it wasn't unwieldy at all.
You really need to hold one in hand and do a few cuts to get a feel for if it will work for you.
I've found that it works pretty good, though. :)

Besides the already mentioned Swisschamp, Champion/ Champion Plus, Outdoorsman, Troubleshooter; the ones below may fit the bill.

Ranger
Handyman
Craftsman

Neither have a magnifying glass, but I have used a small magnifier, with some sort of cover, attached to the end of a lanyard that is attached to the key ring. There are not a lot of Vics with magnifiers, this was a way I could carry others without sacrificing the mag glass. It worked fine. I currently carry a Troubleshooter with an attached mag glass. Hope this helps.

thanks bro!
i was at this conference and they were giving out these keychain mag glasses for free! (alright!)
so with that, i think i'll stick it to my Huntsman... and once i have enough money, i'll grab myself either Ranger or Handyman

I beleive a Woodsman is the thinnest knife you can get with all the stuff you want on it. They don't make them anymore so you will have to track one down on ebay or somewhere.
