is there anybody who have purchased the outdoorsman? who can help me with that knife? is it as strong as coldsteel says? i read that know comes with vg-1 san mai blade instead of aus8, is this better or not? please help me with that or suggest a knife in this categorie!

I own a Cold Steel Black Sable with the Sam Mai iii steel. It is a good steel for edge retention but I don't know how tough it is as my knife is a folder. I've read that the high polish will get marked up with hard use. This is due to the softer, tougher steel on the outside of the blade.

The handle is Kraton whick many dislike on this forum. The handles can become loose on the tang with heavy use. Also Kraton melts when coming in contact with misquito repellant or heat. Some have complained that the Kraton is too abrasive, too grippy.

I noticed that the list price is $280.00. This seems high. For that price you can get a Swamp Rat, Scrapyard, or a Ranger knife. These companies have very loyal followings. They are not flashy but very functional. Bark River also makes some excellent outdoorsman knives with a more polished look. They also have a super loyal following. Check them all out and get what you like.:D

While I would like to own one of every knife out there :) I just don't know what I would do with a knife like that. It seems too long for the more mundane tasks you usually do while camping, or even skinning while hunting. Yet, it seems too likeweight for using as a chopper or even batoning. Out of curiosity, what uses did you have in mind for this knife?

I agree with GLively's recommendations.

You can buy this knife for 153.00 shipped online. The list may be 280.00, but I doubt many are sold for that.

The composition of VG1 suggests that it should hold an edge better than AUS8. But it might not stand up to chopping quite as well. What happens in real life will depend on the relative heat treat each receives. There is no information on that.

(as Glively alluded to - I am a former Cold Steel user (I've got a dozen or so) that has recently turned a Ranger Knives and Ontario RAT Fanatic... You can't beat the quality for the $$. Just my $.02)

I have a cold steel Outdoorsman in AUS8A. I was told by the store it was VG1 San Mai when I bought it. I checked with Cold Steel. Mine is AUS-8A. All VG1 say VG1 San Mai on the blade. I took the knife out into the Mt. St. Helens woods and spent the afternoon skinning (barking) dried alder polls for walking sticks. This usually dulls my D2 or A2 blades to where I sharpen themn when I get home. I was supprised and ammazed at the AUS-8A Outdoorsman. It is my first experience with AUS-8A. I have avoided it. I did not need to resharpen it. It held up equally well to my BG-42 X-42 SOG Field Knife. The sharpend bone cracker on the spine is a pain. It prevents the knife from batoning. The bone cracker cuts up the baton and absorbs too much energy. Haven't tested it on any bones yet. The fit and finish is first rate.
