hey guys. im a pretty young outdoorsman and i have noticed alot of defficencies in my gear. namely i dont have enough warm gear, my boots are worn out, my pack is way to big and my optics are junk! i really need to replace as much of this gear as possible before october - november so that means the knife buying is coming to a hault. i need to pick a nice edc to last for almost a year!. :(:(:(

if you cant already tell i spend a lot of time hunting and fishing. from october 1st to january 1st i am hunting almost every day and from about march to august im fishing as much as possible. i need an edc knife that can do the regular stuff like cut boxes, tape, food, rope, plastic straps etc.... like 99% of us do. but i also use my edc knife as a gutting and skinning knife for deer, duck, turkey and cyotes along with walleye and salmon, cutting open bags of bait, hay bail twine and wrap and a billion other things.

i would prefer a 3.5-4 inch blade with a super steel. a knife with a grippy texture such as g10, an amazing slicer, a knife that is thin and not very wide. i would prefer to forget about it in my pocket. i would like it to be very water and weather resistant. under 5 ounces is preferred and made in the usa is a must! it need to be under $200.

so far i have found the benchmade 710 with m390 steel and the spyderco military. im favoring the 710 a little bit because it is not as wide and has a shorter handle along with the m390 steel. so i think it would be more comfortable to carry. in the past i have had troubles with the axis locks and the omega springs and i dont know how it will work with gloves. however i love spyderco and i cant get enough of the spidie hole because i wear gloves so darn often. that big handle often helps with gloves. i also like spyderco as a company a heck of alot more then benchmade but i will buy the better knife for those tasks.

so is it the benchmade 710 with m390 vs a plain jane military or your possible choice. please help me out because i gotta live with this for a long time!

sincerely,
bryan

Folder: Spyderco Manix 2 XL, or the regular Manix 2, Spyderco Endura (not USA made, read a few threads on this though)
I'm also fearful of using the Axis lock in humid/wet environments, as I've read that rust affects the spring strength. If you get an Endura, you can afford boots.

You are an outdoorsman who does a lot of hunting and fishing and you don't already own a knife? I mean if you really need to upgrade other gear the knife or knives you already own should be fine, unless you only have BS junk knives to begin with.

I don't mean to be a dink here, but really if $ tight or needs to go to other things first whatever knife you have if fine. I have quite a few old knives, like from the 40s and 50s, and they are just as good today as when they were made. We are not talking about disposible things here...

And yes, I also buy knives I don't really need so I do understand "wanting" a new knife.

If you must have something, an opinel and a mora will get you by and for about $20 plus shipping.

Ontario RAT 1 for a folder, I'd have to doubt that it can't do anything those others could do, and a whole lot less money.

Fixed blade, Mora Companion F.

I already have a manix 2 & a manix 2 sprint run ffg

I already had one and the stop pin broke.... And it's made in china so I will never buy one again. You would be surprised by the differences between a $30 folder and a $200 folder. There is no comparison

Well yea I have a lot of knives! I am on blade forums after all hahah. I just want a new edc knife. Normally I will carry about a $150 edc for 2 to 3 months. But I will be carrying this one for a longer period of time so I want something that will be very good. I use my edc as my hunting and skinning knife along with some other tasks so I want to know what knives will be a good edc and a good skinning & gutting knife.

If you're skinning and gutting with the knife you probably wouldn't want a folder. The knife will be pretty nasty unless you break down the knife completely and clean it every time. Get a small fixed blade dude.

its no big deal.... everybody at our camp uses a folder. Also think about what the buck 110 was designed for. A folding hunting knife

How about a ZT 550. I dont know that it will be a great slicer but it will do any task you need done and has a good steel. Also if you want a thinner blade a Spyderco Military might be what you are looking for. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Hmm I would be a little worried about the omega springs if it was getting bloody all the time but I have no real experience to back that up. I have broken an omega spring before, in a folder I only carried occasionally (943). They are both pretty tried and true designs though. Have you thought about a paramilitary 2? Similar design to the military but it would ride more like the 710 while being a bit lighter I think. Just remember, the spydies with the lanyard tubes cannot be taken apart easily, so when you do want to clean it you'll have to give it a bath and blow it out with air. Personally if it were me, i'd go with the para 2. I think it would do well in the tasks you listed.

I'm with the "get a fixed blade" crowd on this one. I've been liking Bark River knives lately... You could get a Classic Lite Hunter in CPM154CM for about $150, or their take on the Bob Loveless drop point hunter for right at your $200 limit. Hell, for that much you could get a Fox River in CPM 3V.

imbryan715, Easy does it kid. First off Bear Claw Chris Lappe has been around since 2001 and has over 15,000 post the guys hunts and fishes for real and knows the difference between a $30.00 knife and a $200.00 dollar knife. Moreover about that stop pin on your Rat 1 that is made is Taiwan by the way not in China as you stated, you must have just got a bad one. I've got 5 Rat 1's two in EDC service I hunt, fish and dive in South Louisiana and used to manage an 8,000+ acre hunting property, and the Rat 1's hold up just fine. Additionally Bear Claw obviously thinks like many others on this forum do, just try a search of Rat 1 in general and see all the people who use, carry and like this knife or go to the tape on youtube and there are tons of videos with good reviews.

So take it easy, because it sounds like your either just looking to buy another knife or your trolling. Like someone else already said if your that big of outdoorsman you should already have knives that will suffice for your EDC needs for a year, and whamo guess what you replied to one post suggestions by saying you already had two of that model.

Come on Man.

I have had both the 710 and military. I found the military more comfortable in hand and pocket, and a better slicer. It feels lighter too. My cousin has been happy with a buck 112 as his hunting knife for over 20 years. He uses a filet knife on fish though

I like folders and use them hunting. I also carry a fixed blade hunting, but not fishing. The Buck 110 is a classic choice and you can't go wrong for the price.

I really like the Spyderco Moran (small fixed blade in VG10) in either blade style and it can do everything you need done with a knife except chopping.

There are some moderately inexpensive fixed blades made by Queen that would be perfectly acceptable if you don't mind sharpening them as soon as you get them.

My latest fixed blade is a Dozier K-28 Personal Knife which has about a 2.5" blade. Really nice custom knife for a couple bills that you aren't afraid to use. It actually would make a good EDC fixed blade with the horizontal kydex sheath Bob makes for them.

What do I actually use hunting? >Large trapper pattern slip joint.

How about a Benchmade 810 Contego?
It's a big folder, with M4 super steel, would slice like a laser.
I would get that.

I want a new edc knife! Because I have a knife addiction. I use my edc knife as my hunting knife because I don't like fixed blades at all. I will never buy a rat 1 again. I don't buy knives not made in the USA. I got a rat 1 as a gift and it was a piece of junk.i don't care about the price of a knife. I care about what I get in the product and I hated the handle scales, weight, blade steel etc.....I just won't buy a knife from Taiwan, Japan, china etc....... I care about our American workers way to much to send money to Taiwan just so I can get someThing at a low price

The Great Eastern Cutlery knives (mostly slip joints) are discussed a lot in the Traditional knives forum here. They are a little pricer on average than say a Case, but are very good and 100% made in the USA.

I am not a big fan of using some of the fast opening knives for hunting. I just don't care for the blade shape. But the Spyderco Delica is one of my favorite EDC knives. It is a little smaller than the Endura which is popular. But I believe these are all made in Japan.
