For the overzealous antique knife collector:o, here's a tool that settles a lot of debates, and uncovers a lot of chicanery:eek:!!

Microscope002.jpg

With this baby, you can magnify 40X! That is 4000%!!!:eek:
You can see welded blades, engraved and/or cold stamped tang stamps, and see some telling details about etches. Cracks, rivet details, anything that gives up the truth if magnified. Why did I go so long without one??
For a bit over $200, it is as welcome to me as a mint Jacknife!!

Cool! Can you rig a camera to one of those babies so we can see what you see?

p.s. If that knife bag is full of fakes, I can dispose of them for you. ;)

Just as I was about to offer you a "mint" cattle knife by Imperial. Rats, I would have been found out.;)
Jim

Can it identify the exact battlefield a Civil War bowie came from!? :D
High magnification is a lot of fun. Enjoy your toy!

I have a Queen Barlow and I suspect one of the chromium molecules is missing a couple of neutrons (my fault, I dropped it on the driveway). If I send it to you would you check it out for me?

Actually they were mostly made in Karachi!:D

Rob, how about I just send you a few neutrons??

Charlie, what a great tool. i have a 5x magnifier light which clamps on my table as well as a 9x Zeiss loupe, but i can't spot the details like you describe.
how about the details of your 'scope ? pm me if you prefer.

That's nice Charlie, but I prefer these beer goggles because they're more mobile.

Everything looks better when I wear them, but now I can't hardly take them off.

On the downside, when I took them off the other day I realized most of my knives were fakes and my Jenny Lind was overweight.

So many questions!!
This one doesn't have a camera capability, but they are out there, Tex! That pouch is full of mint knives
- I guess I better keep 'er !

Mike, I am a failure at Weight-Watchers; can I get a pair of those glasses for my wife??
At least while I have my clothes on  ! (Can you wear them backwards sometimes??)

Roland, I got the instrument at a telescope shop down the block. It has both top and bottom lights, and 20X and 40X lens groups, plenty for what we do.
You can clearly differentiate the finest details in the bottom of a tangstamp strike, as I said before. The binocular setup makes for stress-free viewing.
It is made in China, but well made, and costs a fraction of a German one.
China seems to have a handle on optics. The best birding binoculars I have ever owned come from the same place!! The best part is China is slowly changing their human rights issues, from their contact with us. I am turning around some of my attitude on that subject.
Away from politics, If you can afford $230-$260, and want to avoid losing hundreds or thousands more than that, it's a no-brainer.

This is timely! Been thinking about getting a microscope for some time, but I don't know anything about makes, qualities etc. Any further info in this investigation would be appreciated.....

Before this thing gets all blown out of shape, I really need to take a look at the way
the rest of the world may percieve a comment. I was in no way putting down charlies
scope or anything else "pacific rim". It was rather a joke saying that I no longer would be able to use white metal for frames or beer cans for blades cause charlie could now decipher it.
Ken.

I use a scope all the time to inspect my knives, especially newly sharpened edges. I have one at work as an Inspector in a Medical Device machine shop.
Let's me really inspect the fit and finish of knives.

Ken, we know you meant no harm! Even though I missed your joke (duh!), I think the knives and the optical instruments from China are in two different categories of sophistication. Much more effort is put into scientific studies, and consequently the instruments thereof.
I WILL be looking a little more closely at your knives though!!:D
