Outing with the legend himself, JV3

A few things. That knife was DEFINITELY glowing against the snow. Jungle habitat hiking and friction fire would be cool, though a massive bonfire and beer sounds pretty damn good too. And lastly that SOB tea pot was a biznitch to clean. EDIT: The bark added a nice flavor to the tea, didn't even notice the pee.

We need, true need here, to get a lot more of us together for a weekend trip or something. There are at least 6 people around NJ that could make it I'd think. Would just need to find a decent place for making a huge fire and drinking plenty of water, fire water that is.

To add, the mora and machete were great. Machetes definitely bite more than a bk9 for example and the Mora is great for feather sticks and small carving. Splitting the wood is the only thing I don't think the machete would do all that well in, that or hold up well from. The sound was certainly unique from the machete too. Definitely getting a mora asap though.

I find a machete to bite deeper than about any large knife. They tend to get stuck more between swings though. When battoning a machete they chew the hell out of the batton and don't do as well as a thicker knife when battoning denser wood.

As for the mora; :barf: But thats a personal thing :D

I think we can set up a camp out. There are a few places I know of that can handle a decent size group.

Gunknifenut and I are planning something up in Mass now. I am not sure how many people he's cool with having, but if you are interested shoot me a pm.

Thanks for sharing guys I enjoyed.. Myself I always go for the yellow snow:eek:, the ammonia kinda acts like antifreeze on the human body...:barf:

With all them big choppers it would have been nice to have constructed a couple small chairs out of that tree..

Jay, I'm totally in the same boat about the high-end knives, though nice to have, a mora, machete, and a saw simply can't be beat..IMO, YMMV of course.:D

take care,

Rob

thanks, guys. glad you enjoyed the pics.

You guys that live in it prolly hate it, but I love seeing the snow pics  Goid stuff!

nah, it's still too early in the winter so i'm still loving the white stuff. not to mention i can just camp anywhere and there's a ready supply of water

Cool pics. My camera is only rated for -10 and it has been around -25 Celsius here lately. No snow romping pics from this side right now. I really want to play out a ''my car broke down'' scenario and see if I can get it together quickly with what's on hand. Likely the Eskabar and my beater axe.

wow, that's cold. i love winter but once it starts in the single digits i tend to stay indoors. what sucks too is the camera isn't designed to be operated with gloves on.

riley gave me a mora a few weeks ago and i was bitten by the scandi grind! i ended up buying a bhk bushcrafter and looking to get more. that sure is a gateway knife :o

thanks for the offer but ma is too far for me. let me know when you're coming to ny though. we went camping with riley and harry last fall. he definitely knows a lot of good spots here.

Yuppies in the woods!

Vin

how so? i have pretty thick skin so you'll have to try harder than that. i may or may not have stuck my pinky out though while batoning one of the wood :D now, if you call me a bad driver, or a sissy drinker then i'm going to be all riled up!

hey, rob! you're back...i knew you can't stay away here for long :D actually we were talking about making chairs or at least bring a small piece of flat plastic out next time and carve the legs for it while camping. the snow was so thick there weren't really any spots to sit down and just relax. it's really the little things like that that stick out. i'm bringing my flask next time too to aid in creature comforts :p

I'm just jealous, I've been in a recliner for the last two weeks as I broke 8 ribs (and other injuries) in a bad fall and am very pissy.

Sorry to hear that. Haven't broken anything before, ribs at the least, though from the little I know, I'd imagine those are pretty painful to break. Hopefully will be back to normal and bumming around the woods like us.

Next time, I'm bringing my other tarp and my hammock setup. I think with a really good sleeping bag setup, I will be toasty. The hammock would give me a place to sit down too.

What kind of boots were you guys wearing.

I picked up a pair of Hi Tec Yeti II 200i. They did their job very well from what I could tell. I stepped in small puddles with no ill effect and my feet were never cold at all. The gaiters were a big help too. Plus the boots are less than $100.

we need to change that :D get a mountain bike and hang out with us. this terrain with fall leaves and a minor miscalculation on the correct line...

equals this :o

with no major injuries among us, it's kinda funny though to see friends go over the bar and compare which ones were the bloodiest at the end of the day.

Speaking of living near it, the people who live on/near the Appalachian trail are some of the luckiest people. Imagine, literally being able to walk out your back door and go camping/hiking on the AT...:thumbup:

I agree with you 100%. I am so envious of those near the AT. I REALLY want to get on that trail for a month or three :D

I cross the AT four times a day and would only hike the areas a bit further away from where I cross it. The areas I cross are the day hiker attractions, good hikes, but too many people for me. I can cut down a local road and hit a more out of the way section of the trail. I haven't had the chance yet but I really want to get on it for a couple days.
