Outrageous Pricing!!

Could be. I would not be surprised if some of Benchmade's craziness is due to stress over the upcoming patent expiration date.

Other manufacturers like Sog or Ganzo use the axis lock as well. I'm not sure the patent expiring will do much damage.

SOG's arc lock is different, and IIRC, was developed at about the same time as the axis, and thus is not a copy. It works differently enough as well. I liked the early Seki, Japan arc lock SOG's.

Sabre Cat, I believe it was more like 30% increase.

MAP pricing comes up frequently. Some say to contact the online dealers and see if you can get a lower price. Has anyone tried this? Any luck?

MAP pricing regulates the bottom line prices. My local places are pretty significantly higher than online.
Not entirely accurate.
MAP Pricing regulates the Minimum Advertising Price. This is intended to keep online vendors from showing a price that is a lot lower than a brick and mortar can do. This is an attempt to allow the actual stores to compete with online only vendors.

Keep in mind, MAP Pricing doesn't state the minimum at which a knife can be sold, only the minimum at which it can be advertised.

Brick and mortar stores often have a higher pricing due to covering employees pay, store upkeep, and other factors (convenience included).

Online vendors are often just a warehouse with a Web presence, a few employees packing boxes and shipping them out. This savings in not having a physical store allows them to pass that savings onto you and thus see a higher volume of sales, thus making up for the lower "dollar per ring".

Shops sometimes sell over MSRP so my basic rule is, if I go in store and it is 7% more than online, I will buy it to support my local stores but if it is over 7% more, I will buy it online.

I don't even look at knives at gun shops. Some of the bigger box stores have competitive pricing, but often a tad higher than what you can get online.

A little over internet prices I'd expect, and then possibly see them offer me a "special discount for me only to buy today" to entice. But 25% over was just too much.

I see this a lot at gun stores, even gun shows ;150 for a regular griptilian ? its not even worth the 93 or so MAP price for that toy... I guess they just want to sit on this stuff for the next 5 years ...

You may be right. It is my understanding it was 20% based upon the price jump of Griptilians and comments made from members here on BF.com.
There are very few products that Benchmade is now offering that even turn my head. I look at what I get for my money and it is not worth it, IMO.

I looked at a Benchmade Freek the other day at REI. It was comfortable in my hand but felt cheap. At $114 for S30v, I guess it's an OK deal but, for just a few dollars more I can get a Ritter Grip with much better steel.

From my experience, MAP pricing applies to Benchmade and Zero Tolerance. The other brands you mentioned don't have MAP (not sure about H&K as they stand now).

So if you buy a BM or ZT, it should be the same price as it is online. If it's more, I'd tried to talk him into price matching. There should be plenty of margin for him to still make a good profit.
