Well it got up to about 40 degrees today and was nice and sunny out so I decided to go take advantage of the natural light and beauty outside.

Some pics on the good old fence post, and some on the roof of my firewood shelter.

The ZDP-189 Delica 4 is shipping out to Tom Krein tomorrow to have a regrind done and get his "Krein Regrind" logo. (Yeah, I couldn't wait Mike. So I'm having a .015 done to it). :)

Enjoy...

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Excellent pics David. What's the turnaround time for the regrind?

Not really sure. Tom has been pretty sick lately too so I'm not sure. I think he's just now starting to feel better.

I'll wait as long as needed. :)

Great pics and congrats on the regrind, you are going to love it. I am loving that Salt, and actually have a thread in the trade section trying to get a Pacific Salt. I am really curious to use some H1 steel and see how I like it. I guess now is when I regret turning my Endura 3 and Endura wave tradebait into scandi grinds in my love of thin knives, but hopefully a Salt owner will like them enough for a trade.

On a Tom Krein note, he actually cut himself on an M4 Mule that he was mocking up for handles and may be out of commision a couple more days. The passaround knives and my reground Police 3 and new Krein Hydra will have to wait a couple extra days. The poor guy has had terrible luck with his body lately, going from sick to slicing fingers through the nails. OUCH!

My old Enduras have the pointy tip. If I pick up a ZDP189 I'm going to have to send it out just to get rid of that bent beak.

Nice pix. Looking forward to the "After" shots.

Great pics Dave:thumbup::thumbup:

I'm curious if you like the Delica 4 format better when you get it back from Tom;)

Still like my good ol' Delica 3/SE slightly better(has been in my pocket for the past week and still is:))

Keep us posted.

If you are lucky the wait time will be less than a week.....and once you receive it you might not cut yourself within the next week. :D

Love the clip on the Salt David. Did you do that yourself? Delica looks great. I just got a salt and I can't say enough good about this knife. Wicked sharp and light as a feather. I have not given any pocket time to another knife since I got it.

I thought I had seen someone who had heat treated the clip on their salt to give it that multi color look titanium has. can anyone confirm the ability to do this? Nice knives David!

Thanks guys!

Arend,

I am starting to really love the handle and the clip of the D4 better than the D3. I just cannot dig the blade as is from the factory. I'm not too concerned that the knife have a spinter picker tip I just wish it were thinner. So Yeah I'm betting that after I get this back from Tom that it will be my favorite Delica in PE. The Blue SE you gave me will always be my favorite D3 model.

Liveitloud,

Yep, I did the clip myself. I do that to all my salt clips. I remove the clip and the barrel bolt and I put some news paper down and then spray the front and back and the barrel bolt with paint stripper. I bought a spray can of it at Lowes for about $6.00. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and then I wipe the paint all off with paper towels. I then wash it with soap and water and dry it. The paint will not come off of the barrel bolt so well so I remove the excess with a wire brush. After all that I take some 400 grit paper and sand everything. Then I move to 600 grit and usually leave it at 600 grit. Sometimes I go to 1000 grit (I did on the Delica pictured).

I generally don't like black clips on anything but black knives or olive drab (foliage green) colored knives. On colored knives I think silver clips look better. I didn't think the black clip went well with the british racing green (BRG) that Spyderco uses for their ZDP Delica/Endura handles.

I'll for sure be posting "after" shots of the D4. I may actually send the Salt out too to get a Krein regrind and to also make the tip more pointy. :D

Darn! You may have just put me over the edge on a Salt! Nice pictures . . .

David.. how's the edge retention on that Salt? What's it comparable too?

I have a couple Salt's. I think right out of the box the Edge retention is about like AUS-8. After a few sharpenings (about 5 or so) it seems like it is about equal to VG-10.

I like it very much and I can get it nice and sharp. I can get H1 sharper than VG-10. It's actually a pretty neat steel.

That is good to know, as I have a hardly used Pacific Salt heading my way! It will probably head Tom Krein's way soon, too, to get a FFG and .010" edge and pointy tip like Wire Edge's knife over on USN. I think I am going to really like H1 from everything I have heard.

What is it about the blade you don't like, and what are you going to have Tom Krein do?

The reason I ask is that on Saturday I ordered a Delica 4 in green with zdp-189 steel. I was wondering about sending it to TK but I wasn't exactly clear what he would do with it other than make it sharper. Does he change the shape or geometry of the blade?

What are the benefits of a TK regrind (other than his logo on the blade!)?
