I may stand to be corrected, but I don't think anybody has trademarked anything by "spydie" holes and "talon" holes. You will likely be okay to use an oval shaped opening hole.

spyderco is really reasonable about use of the hole. they jsut want to make sure that it is not used on carp knives that coudl then make the real deal look bad
is i remeber right they ask for 50 bucks per ryear and ask you keep the number rof knives with holes in them under 50. if your at that point they are likly to look at your work as a collaboration. also nice to work with if you want to submit a knife for review
