Been thinking of getting an oven of my own for some time (mill to follow). Most of my work (95%) is under 14" overall. I see most ovens have 14.5" and 18" sizes. Would I be OK going with a 14.5" oven on a 14" blade? Is there a minimum distance the tip should be from the front/back of the oven?

did the same thinking when i got my kiln get the 18 i have an 18 and wish it wass 22 or 27 inch. with foil pack that adds to blade length in kiln and as for distance i get fairly close but then again i always put the tang to the back of the kiln as if it gets a bit of over heat its not the end of the world (i also have kiln blocks that shield blades from direct blast of the coils )

Get the biggest one you can. You won't regret having extra space. You'll always regret not having enough oven for a future project.

As a general rule, you want at least 2" on all sides of the blade from any side or end wall. Extra room is fine, less is not.

My version of a kiln block was a slip firebrick in the closed end. :D I bought a 24 and wish it was a 45.

I have a 24 inch Paragon. The added cost for a longer kiln was relatively small so I figured it'd be best to think ahead. My kiln gives me in practice 20 inch after the 2 inches are retracted front and back.

I mean, a 270mm Gyuto with a western handle is well over 16 inch. And when the zombie apocalypse dawns, you need to make machetes.
